Re: Visit to Fiddler's Green in Austin

I visited Fiddler's Green a couple months ago. The Ellis F was unbelieveable. The Ratliff F had old strings, but my take was that if it had fresh strings it would have been on par with the Pava. ...

    Re: Opinions on Ratliff Mandolins

I have and play regularly an Audie F model, s/n 9 hundred and something. Hardly ever play the Weber F since I got the Ratliff. Definitely would be worth your time and gasoline to go check it out.
  3. Re: D'Addario EXP74CM "Chris Thile Gauges" Now Available

Roland White mentioned in a seminar a few years back that he used the 75/74 combination being discussed. I like the combination, but it works a lot better for Roland than it does for me. Looking...
  4. Re: Ratliff Mandolins-would love to hear feedback of owners/playe

Don't know a thing about the Country Boy model, but since I picked up the Ratliff R-5, the Weber mandolin and the Martin guitars have stayed in the closet.

Re: What do you want out of your music store?

In answer to John's question,,,isn't it worth a little extra money,,,,?

I would say yes, in my case an extra 10% to 20% more than the dot com or 800 number stores would be reasonable if the local...
  11. Re: Has anyone ever stolen anything out of a mandolin case?

When my octave mandolin is out of the case(looks like a banjo case) I always keep it locked to make sure no one puts a banjo in it.

    Re: phone pole species

Depends on the geo. In the northeast US a lot are from red pine.

And in the southeast, many are from yellow pine.

    Go figure.

Add Roland White to the list of tone gard users. Add me to the list of happy owners. Don't need to worry so much about belt buckles, etc.

    Re: Tonerite rental??

I don't use my Tonerite all the time, so will figure out how much per week I will be asking, and will then put it in the Café classifieds.

Re: Wavy grain on a mandolin top

I'm very happy with the sound of a small volume maker's F style with a spruce top sawn off-quarter showing somewhat diagonal "waves". He wouldn't have built it or shipped it if he thought it was...
