    Re: Ovation MCS148 Mandolins

I put a small brass bar on the bottom of mine so it will accommodate loop end strings. Works great and the strings settle in pretty easily.

    Re: Flying with a mandolin...

Almost every major airline's web site will have a list of their rules regarding musical instrument carry-on's. And most of them do, in the rules, provide some latitude for small instruments,...

Re: How often do you have to tune your mandolin?

If the question was "self-evident", then why are there so many different answers to the same question of "how often do you have to tune your mandolin?"

    Not a bad question, though.

    Depends upon...

Re: How often do you have to tune your mandolin?

Every 6 months whether it needs it or not...:)

No, really, I tune it just about every time I pick it up. It may not need much tuning, but even a little out makes a huge difference, especially...

    Re: Elderly Instruments?

I just bought a Kentucky from them online a few months ago. It arrived in excellent shape with a terrific setup (has been a very easy play). They have my thumbs up.

    Re: Recommendations for Video recorder

If you want small and simple, the Flip is the way to go. I would advise getting a tripod, as well, regardless of what camera you end up getting.

Re: Playing de-tuned strings - on purpose?

This is something that is often done with pianos for either certain effects (i.e., the Honky Tonk sound, which can be augmented by putting tacks on the felt hammers). Many piano tunings on the 3...

    New Kentucky KM700

I bought one of the last Kentucky KM700's that were on clearance (and what a great deal they were!). It sounds great and is pretty fun to play.

Re: Your opinion on Ovation instruments?

Thanks... for me it was simple and it works (however, note the caveat below).

I didn't need to file notches. The tension was sufficient to hold the overall assembly and the string locations. I...

Re: Your opinion on Ovation instruments?

By the bye with respect to the OP... I have two mandolins, the Ovation and a Kentucky KM700. If I am playing with other folks and for most of my practice now (I am still fairly new with the...

Re: Your opinion on Ovation instruments?

It is one bar inside the other. I did that to add strength, though I don't think the outer bar necessarily needed it. I also did it to deaden any potential sounds (one bar is copper, the other...

Re: Your opinion on Ovation instruments?

I kind of made up a fix so I can use either ball or loop end strings on my Ovation. The picture probably says it best.
The bar is two brass bars that I bought at a hobby shop. It seems to work...
