Very, very nice. Also, have you checked out the Song-A-Week Social Group?
My daughter-in-law (a violin player) and I (mandola) are doing the following for our family Christmas celebration:
Jingle Bells
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
Stille Nacht (Catherine...
I learned this way, and it has worked for me.
However: there is very little instructional material written specifically for the mandola and it might be hard to find an instructor who has a...
This seller also has a 1943 D-18 Martin Guitar for sale for $26K. Auction on both items closes on the 14th.
If you can find a beginner jam (with a leader), that really is the way to go. I have been fortunate to find one close to where I live, and it's been the greatest thing for me.
Expectations are...
Being part of a mandolin orchestra has been a fabulous experience for me. As with you, this was something that I had aspired to for a while and have been very happy that I can participate.
I hadn't thought of looking for Recorder arrangements. Both the Courtly Music and the Boulder Early Music Shop sites have a good selection. I'll definitely order a couple of these and try them out....
There is a group of 7 of us who formed a Christmas music group this year (4 mandolins, 2 mandolas and 1 guitar). We didn't get started until early October and one of our members was gone for 3 weeks...
I've really enjoyed this thread. Thanks to everyone who has posted their Christmas music and thanks to Ken for starting this topic.
Merry Christmas!!
There are 7 of us from our Mandolin Orchestra who have formed a sub-group to play Christmas music. This was our first year. We learned 19 Christmas tunes and had 4 performances. The last one was...
My Mandolin-related thankfulness:
1) a local mandolin orchestra which welcomes players of all abilities and has a conductor/music director who is able to find a wide range of interesting music for...
I had spotted this at an internet store and was wondering if it might work. I'll give this a try.
. . . also sounds interesting as an alternative.
Thanks for the suggestions.
It's a Weber which is coming with a hardshell case, but I also like a gig bag (because I often need to carry both mandola and octave mandolin as well as music, music stand and instrument stands). ...
For any dola players: if you use a gig bag for your dola, what do you use and where did you find it?
Thanks.
Thanks for all of the good information as well as the photo. #Very helpful.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on whether or not to have a strap button put on an Octave Mandolin. #Mine is a Weber Sage #2. #I think the instrument would be supported much better that way...
Excellent advice. #I tried playing Angeline the Baker last night and realized that even though I was avoiding the affected finger, the pull from the others impacted the splinted one. #Even though...
Just got back from having surgery on my left hand -- last joint on the long finger. #Right now there is substantial local anesthetic in my hand so my other fingers don't move right. #As soon as that...
Lyric from a Keith Urban tune "take your cat and leave my sweater". #I'm a huge fan of both Keith Urban and Brad Paisley #(I may be the only one here on MandolinCafe).
I was a little worried for a couple of minutes there, but they got it back together. (Not as mandolin practice tonight as normal -- had to watch the crimson and blue.)
I'm a KU grad. My daughter is in her senior year there. Rock Chalk Jayhawk, KU!!!!
I'm definitely a beginner at both. #I haven't developed the "sense" yet to know when chord changes are happening and what they are. #Watching the guitar players hands really helps out when I'm...
There are quite a few suggestions found on this thread:

In addition to getting pointers on technique, have you experimented with different picks? #For me it's easier to hit both strings if I use a very thick pick.
Thanks to Tedd for finding my "oops". A mandola orchestra might not be nearly as interesting!!
