  1. Re: What's up with the change in Weber's line-up?

Interesting that they only offer the Bitterroot as an OM.
  2. Re: What's up with the change in Weber's line-up?

    Thanks Tobin. This is helpful.
  3. What's up with the change in Weber's line-up?

I saw recently that Weber is drawing down on a lot of their production models (almost no mandolas anymore, it seems). Does anyone have any insight for the reasons behind this? One thing I loved...

    Re: Weber mandolin serial numbers

My Gallatin's label reads "4188203", so if I break it up, that reads 4-1882-03, or the 1882nd Gallatin F-style made in March, 2004. Not too bad having purchased her essentially "new" in 2013.
  5. Re: Mandolin players who took up the fiddle - talk to me!

Re. #3, it depends on the teacher. Ask around--you might find that there are teachers in the area who sit well in both the classical and fiddle camps. There's a lot of overlap, to be sure. Right...

Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

I've been working on Brittany Haas' version of "Dry and Dusty," which Joe Walsh taught us this weekend out at the Canaan Institute.

    Flanders and Swann's "The Sloth"

Hi all (long time in posting--wow).

I'm trying to figure out the chords to the bridge of the song ("I could climb the very highest Himalayas....") and for the life of me can't figure them. Any...

Re: Not your typical Mandolin/dog thread.

Thankfully, my dog just finds musical instruments strange and foreign.

Re: Not your typical Mandolin/dog thread.

Keep it in the case, just in case, especially if it's a small dog that's not well house-trained. That piece of chipboard saved me one day when visiting my grandfather's place...

Re: Benefit of Mandolin Cafe cap

You can also imbue it with mojo by getting famous musicians to sign it. (I've got Dawg and Ronnie on mine!)

    Thoughts on the Mandostrat?

They have a four-string down at the local music store here; I gave it a whirl a few weeks ago and liked it, though am not used to the whole "no tailpiece" thing. For people who have them, how have...

    Re: Wd-40

I wonder how Hoppe's #9 would fair on an instrument? Probably not well, but might make the gears really smooth.

I made the mistake (?) of putting Hoppe's on my bike gears. They're smooth...

Bela Fleck says that he uses nose grease to slick up his fretboard. No joke.

Re: Excuse me... What's in the case?

I've gotten the "Is that a banjo?" question before, once legitimately, and afterwards from friends who wanted to rankle me (followed with loud threats of defenestration on my part). Of course, now I...

Does he have the G string double-strung? Or is that just a trick of the light? Still, gotta love those triplets.
  17. Odysseys in Bizzaro Homemade Instruments: The Cigar-box Lyre

    Hi folks,

It's been a while since I was on here last--figured I'd pop back in. Anyhow, I figured I'd share something I made last spring with you--a six string, pentatonic cigar-box lyre. Sounds...

Re: Porter's Love Song to a Chambermaid

Woah, just found this thread again! I found a new chordsheet on the net that works quite well (Fats' tune, in C): http://ukeireland.com/pdf-chords/porters-lovesong.pdf

Can't tell if it has the finger wear by the fretboard extension like the eBay one. Still, even if it's an illegitimate instrument, it sounds great in his hands.

    Ithaca jamming

    Hey all,

I'm moving up to Ithaca this week to start grad school at Cornell. Any insight on jams/sessions/meet-ups in the area? I know it's a musical town, especially for old-time.

    (I could...

It doesn't look in that bad of shape. Good find!
  23. Re: John Dancer mandolins, fiddles, and guitars from Damascus, VA

Is his website still extant? It's listed as "johndancerwoodwork.com" in Joe Wilson's 2006 "A Guide to the Crooked Road," but I guess 7 years has killed that link.

    RIP Kongar-ol Ondar 1962-2013

He wasn't a mandolinist, but he was a great musician, and brought the sounds of Tuva to a lot of us. He died today due to a brain hemorrhage during surgery.

Re: Bowlback Technique: How to hold properly?

Thanks for all the feedback! The only qualm I'd have with using foam-rubber drawer liner is that I would worry about it eating into the varnish after a period of time (that stuff tends to break down...
