I grew up dancing in the village hall to the Incredible Fling Band (and others) the original line up of which featured "Big Dave Hardy" on bass, and it didn't do any of us much harm ;)

Iain MacLeod, not saying he's the best but if there were a list, his name should be on it.
Try this for pace:

Thats fast, faster than I can make a job of, but it's well short of too fast, for them.... That sort of thing is tricky without...
Orange Tortex for Mandolin
Clayton .50mm for Tenor Banjo
Red Tortex for Guitar
Whilst the Clayton .50 and Red Tortex are more or less the same weight, I find the different materials have...
Seems there's more going on with my jig picking than would first appear, to me at any rate. My neck's been sore for a week or so, so have't been doing much playing as a result. Last night though I...
I'm generally DUD UDU for jigs, but not exclusively so as I find it depends on the tune.
I find the stiffer pick better all round for the mandolin, I use a much lighter pick for the banjo .50mm as apposed to a 1.0mm for mandolin, the mandolin needs to be driven much harder by comparison...
An actual triplet looks like this as represented in ABC notation "(3DDD", the Irish triplet or Scots burrel, looks like this "D/D/D" two 16th's followed by an 8th or the other way round depending...
The various approaches to irish ornaments for the picked string come across wonderfully in this set;

For specific mandolin ornaments, the playing of...
Got a look at the youtube link, finally, problems with connections on the move, and it looks like all the tutors are having a good time. Your right about the sing along of course, everybody likes a...
Aye, the old wild salmon trick ;) great stuff. Thanks for the link.
Heard good reports from last weekend.
Thanks for looking after my pal Garry who was along for the extracurricular aspects of the feis. His mobility has been difficult and more problematic than...
I'm in south west ross Kevin.
"Jenny's welcome to charlie", is a great tune on the OM, in fact I quite like the tone of most Irish D modal-esque tunes on the longer scaled instruments, "Spike Island Lassies" or "My Love is in...
Thanks Werner  glad you like those, as to speed, Kevin about nails it there with his video, 2/4's are often played together or more readily as the march (or marches) of the march strathspey...
Should also add that most abc editors will allow "HP" (Highland Pipe) in the (key) K: field, if it doesn't work just swap out HP for Amix.
HP, if the editor allows it, is a handy fit all key...
Great thread Werner
I think learning to sing the tunes out accurately, no matter how crappy the singing, helps immensely. It's what I do when I'm learning a new tune, as do others that I know.

Oh for the dulcet tones of the late great "Willie Beaton" of loch Carron! For me Willie's version was thee "de facto". Willie sung it for Paddy, Eddie (the spoons) Iain Strachan and myself, one night...
Hope it helped JP.
As to the structure, I'd tend to think of it as 4 8 bar parts, two of which are 4 bar repeats, two are (the same part) 8 bars once through. So, I'd call it ABCB, or AABCCB, but still think about it...
I tend not to dwell on the structure too much, I just wish I could play it :D One of those tunes where I wish I'd learned fiddle as a youngster, I think I'd need the flexibility of a bow rather than...
Calum Breugach/Malcolm the Liar; is one sexy sexy tune, nothing wrong with playing it twice. The "Captain Campbell, Calum Breugach/Malcolm The Liar, King George IV, King's Reel, Old Time Wedding...
The majority of MacIain's land was on the Ardnamurichan peninsula, a very difficult place to get to in those days, still is by modern standards. MacIain's kin were shifted off after the Glencoe...
I think anyone wanting to get into scottish tunes could do well by listening to the pipes and pipe tunes played on other instruments, the pipes are at the heart of it.
Another vote for "Troy's...
