Re: Bass guitar in Celtic music

I grew up dancing in the village hall to the Incredible Fling Band (and others) the original line up of which featured "Big Dave Hardy" on bass, and it didn't do any of us much harm ;)

Iain MacLeod, not saying he's the best but if there were a list, his name should be on it.

    Try this for pace:

Thats fast, faster than I can make a job of, but it's well short of too fast, for them.... That sort of thing is tricky without...

    Re: celtic jig picking patterns

Seems there's more going on with my jig picking than would first appear, to me at any rate. My neck's been sore for a week or so, so have't been doing much playing as a result. Last night though I...

I'm generally DUD UDU for jigs, but not exclusively so as I find it depends on the tune.

Re: Eamon Coyne The Triplet King

I find the stiffer pick better all round for the mandolin, I use a much lighter pick for the banjo .50mm as apposed to a 1.0mm for mandolin, the mandolin needs to be driven much harder by comparison...

    The various approaches to irish ornaments for the picked string come across wonderfully in this set;

Re: Favourite reels to play on your CBOM

"Jenny's welcome to charlie", is a great tune on the OM, in fact I quite like the tone of most Irish D modal-esque tunes on the longer scaled instruments, "Spike Island Lassies" or "My Love is in...

    Re: scottish tunes question

Should also add that most abc editors will allow "HP" (Highland Pipe) in the (key) K: field, if it doesn't work just swap out HP for Amix.

HP, if the editor allows it, is a handy fit all key...

    Re: scottish tunes question

    Great thread Werner

I think learning to sing the tunes out accurately, no matter how crappy the singing, helps immensely. It's what I do when I'm learning a new tune, as do others that I know.

    Re: Calum Breugach

As to the structure, I'd tend to think of it as 4 8 bar parts, two of which are 4 bar repeats, two are (the same part) 8 bars once through. So, I'd call it ABCB, or AABCCB, but still think about it...

I think anyone wanting to get into scottish tunes could do well by listening to the pipes and pipe tunes played on other instruments, the pipes are at the heart of it.
