While we are talking about different versions of this, I've always liked this one by Sean Rowe. But yea, tough to top RT's original.

Don, this is really great. Thanks for posting. I think I sort of did this type of thing anyway but you broke it down much more clearly than I ever could have and provided some reassurance that I've...
I grew up in the area so the tune has always held a special place for me.
It's funny though, I always thought it was a lament for the towns that were flooded when the reservoir was constructed. ...
Thanks. Yes I totally agree that was very much off the cuff but I'm going to try to work up a more melodic break. Something I need to work on in general I think.
I'm procrastinating other things and was wondering if this would work with just mando and voice. I'm always looking for recognizable songs that can be played just mando and voice.
Thoughts?

So left to right is Ronnie McCoury, John Skehan, Jake Joliff, Paul Hoffman and Sam Bush

It's a Kentucky 505 that I have had for about 4 years. I noticed the same issue once and then raised the action a bit and it went away and I forgot about it. I changed strings to see if that was...
My mando has developed a few dead spots where it seems that the string might be hitting frets higher up the neck. On the D-string from the 9th to the 11th fret and the highest single E-string on the...
That was awesome! Don't be put off by the negativity, thanks for posting.

Heres a link to the show from the next night also with Sam Bush sittin in on all tracks. I haven't listened to it all the way through but the sound...
I've done the same thing and yes, you shift if up a string. As far as I play it, there are no notes lower than the A on the G string.
Original is on the Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott "Real Time" album. Dixie Chicks also used the song "Long Time Gone" off that album
I am also starting to think it is the tuning he is in that really brings out this instrument. Either he uses weird fingerings or he is not tuned in fifths. Here is another video of similar playing,...
Thanks! Yea, I tried doing a little research but the beat up nature of the guitar made it tough to know for sure.
Do most of these Gibson's have a similar sound? It seems a lot of tenor...
Haha, yea for some reason I couldn't read that quite right. Almost thought it was "Ste...". Know what model of "Gib" it might be?
First of all awesome song and this guy has some other youtube stuff featuring the tenor. I really like the sound of his guitar, anyone know the make?

Isn't part of Sam's style due to a wrist injury? I seem to remember seeing this somewhere.

Here is a thread where some ideas for The Band's version are posted.
For the little intro I play a 3 sets of triplets walking down like so
A: 7-7-7---0-0-0---0-0-0
E: 5-5-5---2-2-2---0-0-0
then walk down on the A string into the chords with quarter notes
