  1. Re: Mandolin sources in Yale University library

Thank you Pieter for the very thoughtful and detailed response. There is a lot to tease out here, and I need to spend more time with the music. I'm personally very comfortable with your...
  2. Re: Mandolin sources in Yale University library

Hello Pieter. I read your note on ornament above and am generally familiar with ornament from a violinist's perspective. In looking through your editions, I'm curious as to your interpretation for...
  3. Re: Mandolin sources in Yale University library

Fantastic work! Thank you so much for sharing these works with the world Pieter.

    Kind regards,

    Eric
  4. Re: Strings and stringing of historical mandolins

    Quoting Mimmo:
"What Fouchetti wrote about the 4-courses Neapolitan mandolin set-up, generally speaking, is considered unreliable, if not fanciful. A set of strings like those he described appears...
  5. Re: Strings and stringing of historical mandolins

Mimmo's article is _exactly_ what I was looking for. Thanks so much for the reference.

Re: Historical mandolins and cultural preferences

After all these years, I still enjoy this thread. It is interesting reading what we thought we all knew years ago... :-)

I thought I'd push it to the top to see if anyone is interested in these...
  7. Re: Strings and stringing of historical mandolins

OK... So it has been over a decade since anyone commented on this thread!

I find myself in need of new "historically appropriate" 18th-century Neapolitan mandolin strings, and I thought I'd check...
  8. Re: News from the Netherlands - Ferdinand Binnendijk

PM me with your e-mail as I would like to get back in touch.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Howdy folks. Sorry for the long silence. Yes... that instrument has been around for a while, and it has definitely been modified.

One thing though, I do recall seeing several of these six-course...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Yes, exactly... or the "Vinaccio"... that is described in great detail, with nothing said of it being a drastically modified mandolino Genovese.

Just be sure of what it is that you're buying.

Re: How to replace a broken A-model neck

Not that Larry needs me to defend him (he doesn't) but I'll chime in here
to provide a little more background. The saw-through-the-neck photo is
    certainly jarring!

    I no longer own this...

    1801 Matteo Scolari Cremonese Mandolin

    Hi all,

As noted elsewhere, Larry Brown has a new Website showcasing his instruments and restoration work. Larry has done some restoration for me, including a 1793 G.B. Fabricatore Neapolitan...
  13. Re: 1793 Fabbricatore mandolin restoration by Larry Brown

Note that Larry has added photos of the restoration of my 1801 Mateo Scolari Cremonese mandolin to his Historical Mandolin Restoration page. The Scolari was an incredibly tiny and lightly-built...
  14. Re: 1793 Fabbricatore mandolin restoration by Larry Brown

Yes. I liked your "mystery mastic" term. If you look at the photos of the 1793 Fabricatore on Larry's site, you can see how he did that to replace mastic around the sound hole and elsewhere on the...
  15. Re: 1793 Fabbricatore mandolin restoration by Larry Brown

Actually there are/were two luthiers by that name. This Larry Brown lives and works in North Carolina.

    Best,

    Eric
  16. Re: 1793 Fabbricatore mandolin restoration by Larry Brown

Larry has been through some interesting times in the past year, which could explain his earlier reluctance. In general, he seems to be focusing on building guitars and violins. I spoke with him...
  17. Re: 1793 Fabbricatore mandolin restoration by Larry Brown

I do own that mandolin and I am simply *thrilled* to see Larry Brown's new Web presence as well as the in-process photos of the 1793 Fabricatore. Larry is a very talented luthier with deep...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Here, just for fun, is a link to a lovely modern re-creation of a Mandolino Genovese by Federico Gabrielli.

This is (more or less) how...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

    Hi Jim,

Yes, the 1770 Joannes Vinaccia mandolin you linked to does seem to be a legitimate mid-period 18th-century Neapolitan mandolin. I personally find it interesting that a couple of...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Yes, this one is a heavily-modified Mandolino Genovese that has been on the market for some time. In its original form, this was the mandolin type that Paganinni (and not many others) wrote for. I've...

    Re: Ranieri technique

    Hi Rob,

    Welcome back.

As one who as also gotten greatly "distracted" by the lute... I think this is a really great insight (related to thumb-under technique, of course). The hand/wrist...

Re: 1796 Giovanni Battista Fabricatore mandolin

    Hi Steven,

Assuming you are referring to my instrument, then yes, I do hope to have it restored some day. Maybe when Marijan finishes rehabilitating his Fabricatore I can send him this one? :-)...

Re: 1796 Giovanni Battista Fabricatore mandolin

    Hi Marijan,

Thanks for taking a look. You make a plausible conjecture... and many things are possible. Of course G.B.'s nephew Gennaro continued into the 1800s, and there were other Fabricatore...
