Black Day in July, remember it well, my college room mate that summer was from Detroit. It probably doesn't mean so much to younger generations, but a powerful song.
Rod Moag recently died in Texas. I saw him playing mandolin with the Bluegrass Hoppers in Madison Wi in the mid 60's. He had a long time career as professor/musician.

That's where I first heard it. The cross-picking works in F.
Just saw on Facebook that Anthony has unfortunately lost a long and courageous battle with his disease. A fantastic player, and a genuine nice guy.
RIP Anthony.:(
Our Bluegrass Association cancelled 4 concerts through June. Both of my bands have stopped getting together 2 weeks ago, as we are in the older category, and I expect the gigs we had scheduled for...
Two of the best players I know here never use their little finger, so you should be ok. And of course there was Django Reinhardt with only two. I you want to bad enough, you'll make it work.:)

Saw Homer and Jethro in the 50's but the mandolin didn't register. After 3 years of piano lessons, 6 years in the church choir and several years with a bit of finger picking and flat picking on a...
In 1972 I was at the fiddle contest in Weiser, Idaho, and Benny Thomasson was in the contest. My fiddle teacher knew Benny so I spoke to him to pass along regards, then mentioned how much I liked...
According to Wikipedia, the tune has been played in Scotland for over 200 years, and they name a reference in the US from 1760, so it is apparently older than the US Civil War. I have heard...
I have a Zoom H4 and it works very well, is versatile and easy to use. I'm sure either that or a Tascam would be fine.

My best wishes to you, John. I really appreciate Mandozine, a great resource for mandolin players.

There was a video about Rolfe on the Cafe a while back. This should save searching.

Thanks for all the good mandolins you provided, Rolfe, my son has one, and it's a...
I've probably heard more of Nate Bray's playing than anybody on the list, and I guess I have to disagree a bit here. Not in quality, he was a fantastic player, but I never felt that his playing was...
Mike Compton told me he started on a Harmony.

Have both a Blue Chip (TPR60) and the Wegen M150, and have used both a lot. After using the Blue Chip for quite a while, I recently went back to the Wegen. At band practice a few days later, the...
Written by legendary Tom Anderson from Shetland, he gives a short explanation at about 2:45 in this video, after which he plays the tune. - Spencer

I found that using an arm rest, McClure type, put my arm in an uncomfortable position, and I got pains in my forearm, so I had to take it off. Nice piece of work, and now somebody else has it who is...
In case you haven't found them yet, there are many videos of Erik playing with the G2 Bluegrass band on YouTube.

Sounds(?) familiar. When I have mine on the program for speech, everything sounds a bit "buzzy" and metallic. The higher frequencies are really amplified, because there is a big loss there, and so...
