    Apart from practising at home I play mostly in pubs, getting alcohol on your instrument is an occupational hazard, after 30 odd years it doesn't appear to have harmed any of my instruments.

    The Simon Mayor/Mike Vanden reference is merely to illustrate that, if someone can play ALL types of music on the same mandolin, then of course a flat top mandolin would be suitable for playing...

    English mandolin wizard Simon Mayor plays the whole range from bluegrass to classical on a Mike Vanden ' A ' model.

    So really it's not what you've got, it's the way that you do it.

    Mostly, mandolin players just pick up a mandolin, tune it up and play it, so a beginner is getting off on the wrong track by trying out a lot of other things with it before learning to play it.
