Yes, exactly... or the "Vinaccio"... that is described in great detail, with nothing said of it being a drastically modified mandolino Genovese.
Just be sure of what it is that you're buying.

Not that Larry needs me to defend him (he doesn't) but I'll chime in here
to provide a little more background. The saw-through-the-neck photo is
certainly jarring!
I no longer own this...
Hi all,
As noted elsewhere, Larry Brown has a new Website showcasing his instruments and restoration work. Larry has done some restoration for me, including a 1793 G.B. Fabricatore Neapolitan...
Note that Larry has added photos of the restoration of my 1801 Mateo Scolari Cremonese mandolin to his Historical Mandolin Restoration page. The Scolari was an incredibly tiny and lightly-built...
Yes. I liked your "mystery mastic" term. If you look at the photos of the 1793 Fabricatore on Larry's site, you can see how he did that to replace mastic around the sound hole and elsewhere on the...
Actually there are/were two luthiers by that name. This Larry Brown lives and works in North Carolina.
Best,
Eric
Larry has been through some interesting times in the past year, which could explain his earlier reluctance. In general, he seems to be focusing on building guitars and violins. I spoke with him...
I do own that mandolin and I am simply *thrilled* to see Larry Brown's new Web presence as well as the in-process photos of the 1793 Fabricatore. Larry is a very talented luthier with deep...
Wow... $10K to start...
Here, just for fun, is a link to a lovely modern re-creation of a Mandolino Genovese by Federico Gabrielli.

This is (more or less) how...
Hi Jim,
Yes, the 1770 Joannes Vinaccia mandolin you linked to does seem to be a legitimate mid-period 18th-century Neapolitan mandolin. I personally find it interesting that a couple of...
Yes, this one is a heavily-modified Mandolino Genovese that has been on the market for some time. In its original form, this was the mandolin type that Paganinni (and not many others) wrote for. I've...
Hi Rob,
Welcome back.
As one who as also gotten greatly "distracted" by the lute... I think this is a really great insight (related to thumb-under technique, of course). The hand/wrist...
Wonderful news Alex! Thanks for letting us know and congratulations to Ferdinand.
Best,
Eric
Hi Steven,
Assuming you are referring to my instrument, then yes, I do hope to have it restored some day. Maybe when Marijan finishes rehabilitating his Fabricatore I can send him this one? :-)...
Hi Marijan,
Thanks for taking a look. You make a plausible conjecture... and many things are possible. Of course G.B.'s nephew Gennaro continued into the 1800s, and there were other Fabricatore...
One more thing. I haven't X-rayed this one or had the top off, but it clearly has a dual-barred arrangement below the sound hole. This is what I would expect to find.
Best,
Eric
I wanted to repeat one more detail that I mentioned when we discussed table frets before. This instrument has *both* types. There are four metal staple frets (over the inlay), and then three thin...
OK... I seem to have managed to upload a couple images (and there was much rejoicing!!!).
This is the instrument that I have referred to a couple of times, that I suspect is a late instrument from...
Hi Graham,
What a worthwhile project! Thanks for sharing the news. Let us know how we can help.
Best,
Eric
Yes... definitely another G.B. Fabricatore. The end-clasp carving is similar to the 1793 instrument. And... of course... the inlay surround is identical to Marijan's instrument... and the...
Yes, very good to see this thread come back to life. If you compare Alex's video to the photos of my 1793 instrument, you will see lots in common, end block, sculpted neck block, head of iron nail,...
Labels can be confusing. For instance, I believe it is common to find Pasquale Vinaccia & Figli labels dated from well after Pasquale's death. The Figli continues under the famous name, eh? At...
Hi Jim,
Interesting that you should mention the "Deluxe" model. I haven't seen one exactly like the picture either. However, I do have a rather interesting high-end Vega that has a rosewood back...
Ah, what fun! Alex, thank you very much for the video... and the Bach! My day is 100% better now.
I am smiling too because of all of the technology that we casually wield these days... What...
