For me it is more about the pick hand. I find that the radius is easier to pick. Besides it looks nicer. To me anyway. :)

I usually start with a bone from the butcher shop. I let the dog chew on it for a few days and, if I'm lucky and she doesn't bury it, I take it back and boil it in water for a couple hours to whiten...

Fine looking instrument. What is the scale length?
It is simply a status symbol.
I just went to the website and it worked o.k. for

I had one in similar condition. I removed the top, replaced the bracing and added lining as it had none. I also repaired a split between two staves by adding a sliver of new wood. The split was quite...
I use titebond for everything now. When I started out I used hide glue on tops, backs, and braces but found it unforgiving. I really hoped it would improve sound because it sets so hard. As it turns...
Thanks Martin. And I will get around to doing a sound clip soon. All I have to record on is a Playbook right now. Not sure the sound would record well. It is sounding better the more I play it. :)
Kieth, you start with the yellow stain and then apply the darker stain. Do you sand between. Do you let it dry between? Thanks
Thanks guys. I was impressed with the Fine woodworking video as it best suits my task. Although I don't plan to do a sunburst I do like the concept of using black first to accent the figure, sanding...
I am thinking about staining my latest build. The back, sides and neck are maple and I'd like to accent the nice grain patterns. On my last build I used diluted die stain and, although it turned out...
Bolts work great but they do add mass.
I repaired one bowlback which had a separate neck block. The joint was a large dowel.:(
Here is a better picture.

Thanks actually I had started the build last winter. I had a few pieces roughed out including the neck and tail blocks, back and neck. I had also made a form and built a dovetail jig. I expect...
I took the notion to string it up tonight and see how it sounds. The action is a bit high so I'll need to trip down the bridge a bit. The volume seems reasonably good and there seems to be good...

I built a campfire kit. It sounds vastly different from a bowlback. It has more volume and a deeper tone. I have two bowlbacks. There is no doubt that a carved top mandolin should have even better...
Here is the bridge after adding the radius and compensation.

Yesterday I roughed out the nut and bridge. I got the nut glued on and just have to cut the string grooves. The bridge is fitted to the top but I have to add the radius to match the fingerboard.

Glued on the finger board this morning. I use cauls to distribute the clamping force and protect the neck.

I made my own router fixture. The router is mounted under the fixture. It's adjustable for depth and height. I use "L" shaped supports that I move around the instrument body as needed....
