    Re: Vanden mandolins/Mike Vanden

I've had a couple of very highly regarded mandolin builders refuse to work on their older instruments (I was not the original owner of either mandolin), but they did recommend builders who know their...

Saw CT with the Punch Brothers in August. During a pre-show Q&A, CT said that he was using a prototype pick he is working on with D'Addario. No other details, such as pick material, size, thickness,...

    Re: Sounds like a "Log"????????

To me there are three mando tones...

    1) Some mandolins have a strong fundamental sound...the notes are clear with few overtones and not a lot of sustain...you hear the note more than...

Something Auld, Something Newgrass, Something Borrowed, Something Bluegrass is my fav all-time BG recording. Keith is my fav BG banjo picker. Listen to a similar version of Auld Lang Syne played by...

    Re: Loar Sound??

I've never owned a Loar F-5, but I have played and been around a few and, like others, have listened to them live and on recordings for many years.

Several makers, IMHO, can build mandos that get...

Re: Tony Williamson - Lloyd Loar Mandolins

Received my copy of Lloyd Loar Mandolins last week. I'm enjoying the CD, not only the sounds of the mandos but the songs themselves.

Inspired me to stop by Mandolin Central. Tony was gracious...
  11. Re: Grisman's best album (if you had to pick just one)

So many great DG recordings. DG is the reason I play mando. Years before I ever discovered Monroe. Lately I've been revisiting Dawg Jazz/Dawg Grass. One side of jazz with Grapelli and others and one...

    Re: Woody Sounding Mandolin

The easiest thing to do it try different picks. Some picks roduce a brighter sound and some a darker/rounder sound. You could also try different strings. GHS Silk and Steel strings come to mind as a...

  15. Re: Hand Made/Small Builder Mandolins that punch above their weig

  16. Re: Hand Made/Small Builder Mandolins that punch above their weig

I've played Heiden mandos (never owned one but would love to) and I believe they are excellent - light-weight, loud, thick notes, excellent playability. I agree with Garrity that the Heiden sound is...
  17. Re: Hull/Weber, Jarosz/Collings, Lovell/Duff - mando tone

I've had the good fortune of actually being very close, ~three feet away, from RL and SH as they've played these mandos. RL's Duff is tone bar braced. It is very open and sounds more traditional to...
  18. Re: FInally broke down and ordered a set of Teds strings

I'm on my third set and absolutely love them. They give my mando a and balanced sound I never could get before and they play easy. I played mostly EXP-74 strings for the past few years. I hope your...

    Re: Pick thickness

As rsgars, I like to treat myself to a pick tasting every now and then as well. I get my picks out and mess with them. For me, changing picks is the easiest way to change my sound.

    Over the years...

    Re: Hutto copy

I have played a few Hutto mandos over the years. To me they have a deep/robust sound. Dearstone mandos are the closest I have played to the sound of a Hutto. Haven't played a Copperhead yet but would...
