Scott, thank you for going above and beyond what most site owners would do. It is truly commendable.
Being someone who has bought and sold numerous times on the cafe, my best advice is to talk on...
There will be lots of us local pickers camping.
Shouldn't be hard to find. Just follow your ears!
I plan on picking virtually non-stop the entire weekend.
Great cover on that new CD.
I will be teaching a workshop on DDAD fiddle on Saturday at 12 noon.
BTW, you can tune your mandolin like that, too! Sounds cool!
BTW, great mandolin workshop at the festival on Saturday:
Bluegrass Mandolin Styles - Dennis McDaniel, Billy Bright, Todd Jagger, Dennis Ludiker, Christian McAdams
See you there!
Howdy Folks, I want to get the word out about the Austin String Band Festival. If you are in any way in or near Texas in mid-October, I hope to see you there. Here's the low down:
The Austin...
Ralph does finger pick the mandolin!
John Allison is an incredible luthier. He has done work on many of my instruments and I have played many that he has made. He is also a heck of a nice guy. Highly recommended. Good luthier pick,...
I just played one of the Altman's in this shop and it was one of the finest mandolins I've ever played (and I have played a lot of fine mandolins). It was incredible. Had that Monroe tone. I just...
Bruce Greene, in my humble opinion, is one of the best modern fiddlers, and, for some reason, not as popular as a lot of other modern old time fiddlers and bands.
Ora Lee is actually related to Aura Lee. It is just a very twisty version of the tune.
Hoe the Corn Moses
Ice House by Matthew Gordon. If you don't know it, you gotta hear it.
I couldn't STAND him when I was young. I was too into the Dead Kennedys. Then I had a "Fogelberg Moment" in my twenties when I heard him on the radio and thought, "My God that man can write a song. I...
Great job, Tom, playing with the Gray Sky Boys and Danny.
This looks like it is going to turn into a nice little festival.
Did anyone else out there attend? Any thoughts?
I'll be playing in 2 bands at the festival. Both on Saturday. Twangzilla and the Runaway Brides (also known as the Runaway Bridegrooms or the Rising Gorge Boys).
I also designed the logo for the...
I took lessons from Kim when he lived in Austin and played his Gilchrist. It is an unbelievable mandolin, I can assure you. I've played Gilchrist F models that didn't sound as good (although they may...
That particular style probably does make up a good part of old time jams, the endless fiddle tunes. But some people (myself included) like that. It's always nice to break it up with different stuff,...
[QUOTE]Some of these post are proving what I'm saying. #It is the domination of the "old time" discourse by appalachain fiddle music that bothers me. #King David Jug Band is old time, it is for me...
Don't pick on old time music... It's like Zen Buddhism and is very pacifist. It won't defend itself.
Probably bacause it generally doesn't care what people think.
[QUOTE] Old time jams are great for beginners and novice players
If this is true, why can't anybody follow all the crooked tunes I play?
Refinishing instruments makes me kind of sad. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
DON'T DO IT!!!
I'll be in the Texas Camp with my Collings A and a fiddle.
