Last June, I sent my instrument to a member of this board for repair. And then I waited, and I waited, and I waited some more. I have contacted this luthier multiple times and have been told that the...
You're looking at a pumpkin top F4. The dark area is the shadow created by the ridge. I overlaid an image to show the color and the red circle shows the ridge.
I did notice that the top menu links are slightly different between the home page and the forum wrapper.
I've been using this forum software for years - thanks for upgrading, Scott.
Was it down?
I find that I get better results using Micro-Mesh Soft Touch Finishing Pads from Stew-Mac.

IMHO, when folks talk about skinny necks, they are generally referring to the neck profile, not necessarily the nut width. A round neck or one with a deep V will feel a whole lot different compared...
Is this done by ear or by electronic tuner?
I wouldn't worry so much about the temperature differences, but more about the time it takes to go from the extremes.
Personally, the temperature isn't what concerns me in your case; rather, it's...
Remember that the selling price doesn't always equal the buying price. It's all about supply and demand.
Welcome to the Cafe. Everything you wanted to know about the mandolin, and then some, can be found here. This is a great place - you can talk to both beginners and pros, builders, luthiers, and other...
Looks to me like everybody in the band had the lead. While some may call that music, to me that self expression is just noise.
Thanks for the info - I had to ask. You might check you string heights at the 12th fret. Good numbers are 5/64" on the G and 3/64" on the E. It should be a good starting point and you can adjust from...

Does your mandolin have a flat fretboard or does it have a radius? Just curious, because some of symptoms sound like a flat bridge on a radius fretboard.
This goes along the lines of why use a tapered endpin instead of a screw-in...what's that word? Oh yeah, tradition.
True, if you want to invest in some good tools and have the time to refret. Personally, I would just recommend having a professional do it.
While the intonation might be right, the bridge may be off side to side. Did you check to see if the strings were hitting the frets as before? I ask because you mentioned the 10th fret issue.
The holes should be standard spacing at 29/32" - no drilling required. However, the mounting screws may or may not line up. Usually, 3 of the 4 line up. The bigger concern is whether the original...
One other point with the boiling water test - TS will give off an awful smell, plastic and Tortis will not.
I imagine that some plastic will soften, depending on thickness and on material. It was...
If you view a TS pick from an angle, you should see various lines or bands going across the pick.
If you don't want to or can't use the heated pin trick, throw it in a pan of boiling water for...
Gruhn had one just like that, if not the same one, a few months ago - they only wanted $10k for it. Prices keep going up.
Tradition.
