HI Chip,
How did you get the tone so smooth in your recording? Is that for real or did you equalise the sound balance in some magical way?
Great recording - it really has a lovely rollicking...
I did an experiment at home last night where I got out my old MD-909 Walkman and attached a stereomicrophone to it and recorded my SilverAngel and Bovier F5 in my cellar. I played two tunes once...
I have played the sound clip several times. The differences between the two instruments are minor. I would have to say the playing is suberb Sachmo. I would agree with pefjr that they are pretty...
Hi Sachmo,
That is a great idea. I would love to hear you playing both mandolins. Go right ahead.
Cheers
Nic
I have listened to a lot of sound clips of Kentucky mandolins - KM 900 and KM 1000s. Having now listed to Sachmo63 play his J Bovier, I would have to say that the J Bovier F5 Special has a slightly...
So Sachmo63, I take it you are being facetious and that the J Bovier will meet your needs into the near future. Do you feel the same way after playing it for a bit longer - the rush of the new has...
MAS is cured by avoiding the classifieds in the café, by understanding the hedonic effect, and by finding the right mandolin for you.
The hedonic effect is the short-lived satisfaction of owning...
Hi Oneida Trail,
How is the sound of your new KM-1050 compare to your other mandolins? What makes the feel of the KM-1050 so good as far you are concerned? I may trade an instrument to get one.
I have #17 Black mandolin with a Virzi installed. It is the A4 rather than A2Z but that is merely some cosmetic differences. I think it has a great sound. The trebles are clear and resonant. It...
I would like to draw your attention to an ad placed in the mandolin section today. The wording of this advertisement does a lot of harm to the builder Eddie Blevins who has in effect being given no...
I would go for a Silverangel. It sells for $2,000. Talk to Ken Ratcliff. He makes a wonderful A5 econo model. It has a wonderful deep tone and great projection.
Cheers

John
Would you be able to let us know what brand of mandolin you bought? We are all very curious about it.
Cheers
Nic
The overall character is in the build and woods. Strings play a part but not as big as the first two factors. Do you know if it is x-braced or has tone bars. My Silverangel A5 top is X-braced made...
Well done Eddie with the blonde. Great looks!
It has some pizazz that I have not seen for some time.
A lot of the recent posts have not answered the question of the OP. Anyone willing to offer up any sound samples of a Gilchrist F5 Jr so that we can hear what it sounds like?
That would help to...
Who would you bother distressing a heavy lacquer mandolin? I suggest leaving it to the experts such as Ken Ratcliff and others who do a fantastic job distressing their high end mandolins.
...
Wow, Robb, its a nice balance between the colour and the finish. +1 It would be really nice to find out how it sounds.
I agree that the matt finish sets it off well.
BTW well set up photographs
I think it would help if we looked at the options that have been suggested so far.
1. JBovier A5 mandolin - $800 new; 11/8nut; radiused fretboard; well rounded sound, nice action and feel
2....
Yes, I have done it. I apologise to all those Gibson mandolin owners who revere their mandolins but this Ellis mandolin looks awesome. I love the way the colours express the grain in the top.
I am not promoting the Ellis F5 for personal gain in the classifieds at the moment nor do I have any intention to buy it. I would have to say that it is one of the most superb looking F-5 mandolins,...
I admit that last year I went on a Mandolin hunt. I bought some mandolins that were ok to play and sounded not too bad. It was n't till I got my Silverangel A5 and Mike Black A4 that I settled down....
Brilliant work Ken. She is one of a helluva of a mandolin. You really like to create some artistic flair with your 'distressed' mandolins. Personally, I think your 'undistressed' mandolins are...
Yes, I am doing it today.
I want to say that this email did not come from an interested party on the Mandolin Cafe. It was a reply to an advertisement on Gumtree Classifieds. I became suspicious as soon as they wanted my...
