  1. Re: First recording, just trying to get over my nerves!

Thanks, I never thought of it as being part of the music before. I just assumed it was a fault of technique or something. I do like the sound the sharp, smooth picks make. Kind of a nice, crisp...

Re: The first song you learned

Barlow knife! Then I backed up and it was a lot of "Yankee Doodle" for a looooong time ;0).
  3. Re: First recording, just trying to get over my nerves!

Here's a question. I cannot un-hear the sound of the pick dragging over, then clicking as it comes off the strings. Can other people hear this? Is it a technique issue, or the type of pick? I try not...

Re: Is this a 1930s Kay Kraft?

Mine is just like this. When I bought it, it needed a neck reset and a repair for a center seam split, but otherwise wasn't in terrible shape. My luthier friend loves it as a starter instrument for...
  5. Re: First recording, just trying to get over my nerves!

Thanks, everybody! Believe it or not, I practice on average a few hours a day. I really, really enjoy it--I'm a falconer, and when I'm actively hunting I'm up and out in the world at 5am with my hawk...
  6. Re: First recording, just trying to get over my nerves!

Fluency! There are lots of things I can hear which I know are "wrong" about how I'm playing, but often I don't have the vocabulary to name it so I can go to the 'net and figure out how to work on it....
  7. Re: First recording, just trying to get over my nerves!

Hey, thanks both of you for listening!
I definitely don't mind specific criticism--how else do you learn? Mostly I'm just feeling self-conscious because most of the stuff I've seen posted is pretty...
  8. Re: Electric Mandolin with rapper Raheim of Grandmaster Flash

I am absolutely delighted with this, despite the fact that I pretty much loathe the sax (not specifically here, just an instrument that makes my ears itch in general)!
  9. First recording, just trying to get over my nerves!

    Hello all,
I've really only ever played (or, really, practiced) with an immediate family member or two in the room. I figured I probably ought to get over the fear of anyone else hearing me play if...

    Re: Mandolin prices

I spent about $200 on an old instrument. I'm no expert, but I love the way it sounds. Maybe I'll want to upgrade later on down the road if I ever reach some serious point of skill that tests the...

    Okay, critters in general
    Falconry/hunting
    Hiking, camping

    Roxboro, NC by any chance?

    Hello all!

Just found out that I'm going to be moving to Roxboro, NC some time within the next few months. I've been picking away at this little gadget for a couple years now, but can't say that...

Re: "Hallelujah" tab for mandolin online?

I guess I'm just not confident enough to tackle it--I'm trying to transcribe a couple simple TV songs as a baby-step to learning how to identify stuff by ear and put it on paper, but this feels a...

Re: "Hallelujah" tab for mandolin online?

http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?79663 --there's some great stuff here, but Mr. McCoy's good info is a step or two beyond my skills right now in terms of vocabulary. =)

    "Hallelujah" tab for mandolin online?

Just wondering if anyone has a copy of the tabs listed with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CqkV7HzpX4 --the link no longer works. I have the vocal melody sheet music and guitar chords...

For this newbie, moving to the G#dim and Am7's in Hallelujah is a serious workout!
  21. Re: Simple starter project, transcribing song from TV clip

    Hey, thanks!!!

I can sing the melody (well, Pernell's part) to Endless Road--I ripped it to MP3 and it's in frequent rotation on my play list! =)
I should probably put "sing" in quotes because I...
  22. Simple starter project, transcribing song from TV clip

First, I want to acknowledge that yes, it's probably extremely dweeby that I love the old Western TV shows. =)

I've only been playing for a couple years, no lessons or anything, really at a very...

Hey, thanks! I posted a photo on the mandolin page but somehow it never occurred to me to see whether or not there was a Kay Kraft page =)
  24. Re: Will the lanolin in natural sheepskin harm the finish?

Thumbs up. Ivomec's been in common use for a while at least--I'm 31 and never saw Diazanon used as a kid, always injectable ivomec.
  25. Re: Will the lanolin in natural sheepskin harm the finish?

Yup, not the wood, the varnish.

...Come to think of it, I suppose I should do some homework on how to properly care for the finish anyway. My luthier said I didn't really need to do much to it...
