    Re: Tremolo wrist vs forearm

I am unable to do it as described, except at slower speeds than tremolo. Watch the motion on the Mike Marshall video earlier in this thread to see his technique. Maybe there is a bit of...

    Re: Tremolo wrist vs forearm

The wrist can move on several different axis. Many great players use radial/ulnar deviation to do tremolo. Not much rotation (pronation/supination). I can play at moderate speeds...

    Re: Tremolo wrist vs forearm

Thanks for all these wonderful suggestions. Several of you learned to do tremolo early in life, and I am late to the game. I wonder if it's almost "neurologic". I wish Explorer would post a short...

    Tremolo wrist vs forearm

I am finding it impossible to play tremolo with a relaxed and loose wrist, as I'm in the habit of using my forearm. No matter how I try, I simply can't get the motion shown by Mike Marshall and...

Re: Another old bowlback - ID?

On close inspection, my instrument is different (grain pattern, scratches, tailpiece, bridge). It is otherwise the same. Still, no markings inside or out, or anything on the net to help with ID.

Re: Another old bowlback - ID?

This is getting more interesting. I looked at prior thread:
    http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?122524-Recognize-this-as-a-logo

And it looks the same as mine, which I got on eBay...

Re: Another old bowlback - ID?

Hmmm... no replies. Anyone have an idea what I may have, or where to look for more info. It has excellent woods and construction. A bit of bow in the neck, but plays well in 1st position and sounds...

    Another old bowlback - ID?

Here's another old bowlback I got from eBay last year. Seems very well made, but I have not found anything similar on the net. Can any of you ID this one?
    Thank you!

    Re: Book recommendation?

Well worth checking out Mike Marshall's lessons at Academy of Bluegrass. Mike is a great teacher and can take your mandolin playing as far as you'd like - in ANY direction.

    Bob -
Mandola? Should I be tuning it as such?
Is your database online, as I haven't found it yet. The serial number is too faded to read. The nut to bridge length is about 14 1/8".

Here are a few pictures of my Howe-Orme. The tailpiece is not original, of course. It's in very good shape.9179891799918009180191802

Re: Some pics of my new Howe-Orme

I recently picked up a similar one, in rosewood. Same fine EH Co pick guard. After a trip to our local luthier to lower the bridge a bit, it's a wonderful little instrument. currently my "go to"...

Re: Dallas / Ft. Worth, TX spots?

Check out the jam at the Belmont Hotel bar any Sunday from 3-6. You'll find more Americana and old time music than bluegrass, but a fine jam, all the same.
  14. Re: How to replace a songbook with an iPad, need to auto-scroll..

Take a good look at OnSong. It is an amazing and versatile program, that can easily replace all your notebooks of song lists, sets, lyrics and chords. I love it. Check it out, as it can even...
  15. Re: Requesting feedback for Mike Marshall's School of Bluegrass,

I have been a student since it started, and it's been a real boost to my learning and playing. Mike has videos of Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced lessons, with included backing tracks. He gives...

    Re: Guitarist-turned-mandolinist....advice?

Sorry about my ill-considered comment regarding mando requiring more precision. In the high-pitched range of the mando, the ear is most sensitive, and with its very fast attack (say compared to...

    Re: Guitarist-turned-mandolinist....advice?

Mando playing requires much more precision and good technique than guitar, where sloppiness is more tolerable. I think the biggest difference is that the right hand and arm coordination and motion...

Re: Good instruments and great instruments.

In addition to all the above comments, I would also like to add that the tone of a mandolin, as in all stringed instruments, is extraordinarily sensitive to being in tune. My mandos really "wake up"...
  19. Re: Luthier in the DFW area - need recommendation

You might try John Fitzgerald at 972-288-6490. He did a wonderful restoration/repair recently on a friend's Gibson F-4. Turned out very well.
