  1. Re: Scam alert: "1924 Gibson A-2 mandolin" on Knoxville CL

No telling, there are too many Spurgeon's to count spread throughout East Tennessee.

    Shorty,

Don't sweat it too much, you'll do fine. I just graduated from ETSU last May (where I was in the BG program too) and had to go through a few of those tryouts. They're basically a way for...

Shhh... don't let the secret out!

I've had to layoff 'the hub' until I get a new computer. The shows I have average about 500 or mb each (some are more, some are less), which eats up the...

    Re: 1984 Flatiron A-5Jr...YES!

Welcome to the A5-Jr. club. Mine was built in 87, just before Flatiron was bought by Gibson. It's about as plain-jane as they come, but it more than makes up for it in the tone department.

    Re: Lonesome River notation?

I've got a tab of the mandolin intro and break as played by Pee Wee Lambert on the original Stanley Bros. recording (it's in the key of D by the way). Send me a PM if you want me to e-mail it to you.

Nice find, you don't see many of those either (on an unrelated note, I noticed your avatar. It's a shame about Popcorn isn't it?)
  11. Re: Flatirons - festival, performer, artist, signature

There looks to be a good deal on a pre-Gibson A5-Jr in the classifieds right now. Those older Flatiron A styles, especially the tone-bar braced Jr's (a little biased here), are great mandolins.

    Re: Bill Monroe....43 years ago

Rowan was (and is) awesome, his playing on the live recording of 'Walls of Time', with those powerful bass runs, is perfection to my ears. Oh yeah, along with those already listed, I'd also consider...

    Re: Gilchrist Model 1

I've also noticed that some of the old snakehead Gibson's have the punchier, cutting type of tone (my A-Jr does, that's for sure).
  15. Re: Congratulations Moderator Charlie Jones! It's a girl!

Way to go, Charlie, good to see she's healthy and all is OK. Having a 6-month old daughter myself I'll think you'll soon find little girls are awesome.

it's hard to tell but it looks like a snakehead A-Jr. to me (if this was the one you were talking about).
