Re: A tool or a treasure???

I know you said tool or treasure but I think for me it's both. When playing out and earning money it's a tool. When passing time in a favorable way it's a treasure:grin: I still do have an emotional...

Thanks for all the input. I think I will leave well enough alone at this point. I have only been playing mando for a couple of months now and probably have no business up there anyways.:) My finger...

    Re: Playing the upper register?

Very interesting Jim. I tried the nail also instead of the tip of the finger and sure enough a clear note:) So does this mean we have fat fingers:)) Are we doomed not to play all the way up the neck?...

    Playing the upper register?

Can you use all your frets on your mandolin? On the high strings I can not. I have my action set about 1/16 on the 12th fret. No buzz sound just dead:( Played soft or pushing down hard on the strings...
  7. Re: What do you do in your spare time when not playing mandolin

Re: Hand carving: What's the deal?

I have had many (and still do) CNC and hand made instruments. I found that the CNC ones almost always consistency sounded really good. If I was buying sight unseen I would feel better about getting a...
  9. Re: Relative Humidity recommendaton at 60 deg. F. ??

Interesting. Let me add this to the equation. If a wood instrument is built in 60% humidity at 65 degrees and you store it in 30% humidity at 65 degrees when you get it home you may have a big...

    Re: Does your Spouse know?

My wife doesn't know but my girlfriend does :)) That kind of like the old joke.."I'm not married but my wife is" Seriously though. My wife knows all and supports all of my musical interests.

Re: Savannah, GA - what's cool to do??

Savannah! One of my favorite places. Try to go to the Pink House to eat. Food is great. Harold's is a nice place to catch some jazz bands. Horse and Carriage guided ghost tours are also fun. Lucky...

    Re: Pick Strokes?

Thanks Mad. Yes that makes perfect sense. I play fingerstyle guitar and use a thumb pick and Acrylic nails on three fingers much in the same way. I was thinking of doing the same with the mandolin...

    Re: Pick Strokes?

What got me thinking of up and down strokes not used in the traditional way was I watching Evan Marshall style of playing. For the melody line it was mostly all tremolo for the accompaniment notes...

    Pick Strokes?

I was wondering if the up and down pick strokes is used primarily in Bluegrass music than Classical music or Jazz? I'm not talking tremolo just single line melody's.

    Nitrocellulose Laquer?

I was wondering if I left my strap (Long Hollow Softy) on my mandolin ( Weber) would I have any bad reaction with this finish? Does anyone have this combination that leave their strap on all the time?
