For those going to Goderich in August, here is a handy link for road construction. When I joked about the construction I was really only half joking. We often drive up to the Tobermory area during...

It's about an hour and a half from Sarnia if they don't have the roads torn up like last summer! :))
For me, the shift in thumb position is governed entirely by the width of the neck. For mandolin/mandola I use what Roger is calling "fiddle hand" and for CBOM and guitar I use "guitar hand."
Ok, I'll fess up! Because I've been asked not to sing. :mandosmiley:
I bought my TC OM in 2009 from Elderly's. At the time they had two in stock, one with the cross and one with the knot. As I recall both had a small sticker on the back of the headstock indicating...
I'll second that. I play an $800 fiddle with a $900 bow, and an $800 mandolin with a $35 BC pick. Seems like a pretty decent deal on that BC pick to me. :)
Here's a little side note of trivia. Glencoe is a very popular name for small towns in Canada. It seems like there are two or three so named towns in every province. There are two that I know of in...
Why do you need a tie breaker? At my local session we play it most often in A dorian, sometimes in E dorian, and occasionally in D depending on who is sitting in. When we are really feeling a bit...
Usually whether a note is specified as a sharp or flat will depend on the key of the tune. For example in the key of D the F and C are noted as sharp F and sharp C rather than flat G and flat D....
I read through the detail of John McCoy's post and can say it is fairly accurate. You definitely will require work permits. Those can take time. Being a dual citizen I've never had to go through the...
I would definitely agree with that. Though I currently split my time between Michigan and Ontario I grew up in St. Anne-de-Madawaska NB, which is a French speaking area that is culturally more...
It's 3 days in Michigan.
At one time I had a canoe and kayak specialty sports shop in Flint. With kayaks we often took people out on the water to test paddle the boat before buying - not unlike...

Anne, Fiddler's Companion has some historical information on many tunes, although you will find many to have obscure beginnings.
As to Coach Road to Sligo and Tar Road to Sligo, I've heard both...
I cross the border almost every day and have never had a problem. Instruments travel with me often and no one at the border has ever asked anything about them other than what kind of music I play.
And for good examples of a method that works take a look at Jill McAuley's YouTube channel (see the link in Jill's post). Hard to go wrong with that.
An interesting parrallel conversation is going on over on Session.org: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/27948
Interesting how many players with extensive repertoires eventually come...
To expand on AnneFlies' post I wonder if some of the aversion to playing the old chestnuts in sessions is that many perceive them to be "easy" tunes and that they are somehow beyond that. The...
I have a TC-325 and the fretboard is flat. The 625 I'm not sure about, but I seem to recall it is also flat.
Every time my wife complains about the number of mandolins and fiddles around the house I just shrug and say "Could be worse ... those could be banjos."
Amen to the idea that terminology is a tricky thing. Bruce, I listened to your playing several years ago at the dulcimer festival in Evart and thought it quite traditional (and excellent - for those...
I learned to play the saxophone by ear when I was about 6. My grandfather was a professional saxophonist, and his way of teaching me was to sit in chairs back to back so I couldn't see what he was...
Welcome to the Cafe TimtheBear. I know its a long drive, but if you get to my neighborhood we have a closed session (advanced) in Forest on Friday nights (but we would be happy to have you as a...
Michael,
The more time you spend listening to many mandolin players the more you are likely to find that "the correct way" doesn't exist. As others mentioned early on in the discussion, it really...
Interesting discussion on the differences in picks based on color. I use both TF140 and TF120, and have both thicknesses in both colors. I find as much variance in feel between two white picks as I...
