It is a while since I posted here because of several personal issues and the fact that I got interested in violins. lol.
I have recently purchased a Stiver mandolin which I find to be totally the...
I have a question regarding identifying wood. Is it possible to test the "DNA"?
I am attaching photos of the process and completed repair. Now I have my fingers crossed that the repair will hold when string pull is applied! Paul's observation about bass wood being used in the...
Paul, I have decided to use your bolt up method. I am not removing the fingerboard because the previous repair had a plug already in the fingerboard. I have removed the plug and am now in the...
The owner brought the bass to me for repair. I build instruments and do repair on fiddles and mandolins, etc. I have a good bit of experience on repairs but not on basses. I told the owner this...
Thanks to all who have offered information and suggestions. I am going to discuss this with the owner today and see what they want to do.
I am attaching photos of a Kay bass which was involved in an accident.
I am hoping someone who knows basses will chime in here.
A piece of furniture fell on the neck of this bass and broke...
Seems like no one is saying anything to you, so................
The construction you describe is similar to the old Gibson A & F style fretboard arrangement. In the Gibson design the top was...
For some reason the photo of the rear of the headstock did not load, so I am trying again.

Naturally it now shows up ok after I reposted.
Attached photos are of a Gibson A model mandolin, serial number 19682, FON 2209 which I believe will be a new addition to the archives. I checked the existing list and found two other listed...
OK, just to close the book on this thread....
I am now 6 days into the "new" neck set with the modifications mentioned above and the mandola is staying together. Played it in a jam session last...
I assume the kit came from International Violin because of the name in the background. If you are unhappy with the top, and I can see where you might be, I would e-mail these pictures to them and...
I have rebuilt the mandola as follows:
Extended the neck block by approx. 1"
Removed a section from the back plate and increased the thickness to approx 3/16" at the heel button as well as...
I have started using HHG for my construction projects. It is working fine and I have not had a problem, but, I wonder: After I use the glue I turn it off and it may be two days later when I use it...
Another vote for Siminoff's plan. I have built 2 H-5 copies using this plan as well as another mandola of my own design but used the H-5 plan as a starting point for graduation on it.
All of my...
Really nice job. Looks great. As others have noted would like to hear how it sounds.
Rob, I may just do what you have shown in this photo plus a very large screw through the heel button.
Just joking about the screw but when I redo the neck block I may very well remove a section of...
Thanks to all who have responded.
Just to comment on the quote from Martin:
These two instruments have caused me to tear my hair and fingernails etc. I have built 13 from scratch and this...
I have two instruments with which I have the same problem. I cannot get a neck to remain glued in place with either.
One of these is mandolin which was built long ago by a friend. The neck...
I wonder about your comment re the neck not being made by Gibson. Just curious as I am not interested in the mando. Just trying to learn more about this vintage instrument. What do you base that...
100 years from now who in your opinion will be the top ten mandolin luthiers/manufacturers from a collector's standpoint?
My list:
1. Loar era Gibson
2. Gilchirst
3. Nugget
4. ...
I bought a new one in 1974. I had "Gibson Fever". Worst mistake I ever made. Traded it for a fiddle and a Japanese copy F5.
Lost big time on that deal. Paid $1500.00. Lots of money in...
Thanks for the advise. Acutally the inlay fits except for one place. I removed the filler from the bad place and replaced it with a bit of maple and all is well. It is not perfect but neither am I.
I am doing an inlay on a maple headstock. The inlaid piece is purpleheart.
I have tried maple filings with titebond and with CA. Both are too dark.
Any tricks out there to lighten the filler...
I have just been through this debate personally after a quick failure of a neck joint on a new build.
After thinking the whole situation over I believe that the problem I had with Titebond was...
