Re: Let's hear your BEST musical joke?

Some of these jokes are really sharp. I don't have a joke, I'm a little flat.

    Re: Secure Endpin?

Try this - Original Peg Drops by Ardsley

If the endpin is loose or falling out, check your humidity levels; the end block may be drying out.
  3. Re: Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

It's a great ebook. I got my copy in 2014.

Re: Strings for sore finger tips

Guitar or mandolin, most beginners try to fret a note by placing their fingers in between frets. Once you figure out (learn) how to place your finger right up on the fret, you get a clean note with...

Re: Strings for sore finger tips

Absolutely good advice. Too many beginners apply the wrong pressure on the strings and have the wrong placement on the fret. This is not a guitar; do not try to press the strings to the fretboard....
  6. Re: How to clean and polish Varnish on my New Pava Pro

I have used Jubilee for years for cured varnishes and like how it cleans and polishes. I personally wouldn't use anything but a dry or damp polishing cloth until the varnish cures, 6 months minimum;...

Re: No frills vs fancier mandolins

I totally agree - too many generalizations about wood, finishes, and bling. I would say that, in general, a good player can make a bad instrument sound better. And a bad player with a good instrument...

    Re: Pickguard Mountain Brackets

Amazon has brad nails; $5 will get you a 1,000. A piece of coat hanger will be too soft; a finish nail with the head cut off will be the stiffest. Like Ray(T) said, you can make your own.

    Re: Pickguard Mountain Brackets

I have always used the two pins and drilled undersized holes. A drop of glue will hold it. Make sure your pickguard is angled the way you like it and drill the holes parallel to the pickguard and...

    Re: Gibson F-5G or Goldrush?

Good call on the Goldrush. I have owned both and generally preferred the GR's look and voice.

Re: Straps for A style mandolin

I found this strap awhile ago and it works great. The loop is small enough to fit under the strings, just above the nut. It has never impeded with my playing.

  13. Re: Collings Birdseye/Italian A5 Comparisons: V vs lacquer

I bought a Collings Birdseye/Italian MT2V from TME and totally agree with Mandobar on her assessment. I've owned MT2's (older versions), MF-5, MF5V Deluxe and a MT2V and thought that MT2V was the...

Re: Christmas tip or Christmas gift?

I would do $50 unless you really know her to give her a personal gift. Everyone can use a little extra cash for the holidays.

    Re: Loar Fret spacings.

This has been an interesting thread. I'm not an audio engineer, so some of that discussion is beyond me. But the process engineer in me is curious about the spacing and the logic behind it. Does...
  16. Re: An Irish Jig Played by Three Different Instruments

#1 and #2 sound very similar. #3 is different and I'm guessing it is the Ellis.

Re: How do you remove that metal seal?

As far as the plastic ring on the cap, I always pop it off with a screwdriver. I don't have time to deal with it when I'm in the middle of something. I generally just punch a screwdriver through the...

Re: How to set up a mandolin

Thanks Rob for a very information eBook. With solid set-up information and a good set of tools, most mandolin players should be able to do a basic set-up on their mandolin. Cutting a nut or setting a...

Re: Kimble F brings me back

Thanks everybody. She is a beauty. I've been playing her a lot, still need some more time to get her to open up. She definitely has great tone and response across the strings.

Re: Kimble F brings me back

Thanks. Yep, I bought it from Umanov early last week. We delayed shipment due to the weather; trying to time shipping of instruments during the winter is tough.

    Kimble F brings me back

Well, I'm finally picking up the mandolin again. Back in 2008, due to a number of reasons, I put the mandolin down and sold most of my mandolins. I pretty much played my guitar. This year, I got the...
