  1. Re: Value of a Gibson A Mandolin 1916 vintage

Oh no - don't say that! :crying: Sigh ... If I only could have waited ... :whistling: But I needed something right then (my F-12 I'd had for 30 years had been stolen, and the ~1935 A-00 wasn't...

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

That's pretty cool. Wonder how it'll play in Alaska? :whistling:

As it happens, we have something like that here, as far as you can get away from Alaska in The Lower 48. It's called the...

    Re: The blues on mandolin?

It's beginning to look like there may be as many blues scales as there are players. ;) That can't be, of course - statistics and probability prove otherwise. But I have my own, which I'll get to in a...
  4. Re: Value of a Gibson A Mandolin 1916 vintage

For a little perspective ... See the 1917 that went at the BIN price of $899, the one with the pickguard and case? That's about what I paid for my 1917 in slightly less spiffy condition and without...

    Re: Fiddler on the Roof

Oh, I know. Don't get me started on singers! So I'll try to stick to just this story ... Not A#m, but Abm. In one of my bands the singer will get a friend up on stage occasionally to sing a few...

    Re: Thread "lock downs"

True enough. In fact, one of the surest ways to get a thread locked down is to bring up the subject. And with nothing else going for this thread ... :whistling:

    Anyway, thanks! I think ......

    Re: Fiddler on the Roof

The sheet music at Music Notes will at least get you started. Of course you will have to adjust what you play and how you play it according to the conductor's direction.

    There is no mandolin part...

    Re: Fiddler on the Roof

The Music Notes site looks very useful, especially if you know which songs you want, and you can read standard notation. There aren't any mandolin parts - and I seriously doubt there were any in the...

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

Well, that should do you for a while. You might want to change it when you hit 40. If you're still together, of course.

I knew a band that used to change its name every time they put out an album....
  10. Re: Lambchop plays the 2013 Northside Festival Brooklyn

Nah, couldn't be. Shari Lewis died near the end of last century. This is self-serving promo spam. Not sure if there's any MC. I dunno; haven't seen them in years. They'll be on Jimmy Fallon on...

No kidding! :)) Just too bad he had to have a name in advance.

So, what did you come up with?

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

I believe that's Good and Bad there; Eli Wallach's character (not pictured) was Ugly.

Shawn kind of buried the lead - his band is opening for Ricky Skaggs, and they haven't been together long...

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

I swear - threads like this are among the worst, and best, of all the threads unspooling around here. Pretty sure most of the suggestions are ones no one would want for their own bands. I mean,...
  15. Re: Rhythm & Roots Rhode Island Labor Day Weekend 2013

Of course, everyone has their favorites. There's Steve Earle, The Texas Guitar Women (hey, that includes Cindy Cashdollar), Carolina Chocolate Drops, Marcia Ball - but I'm most thrilled by The Jim...

Re: Changing mandolin strings string is a pain

    Pop Quiz!

    1) Perhaps this was the inspiration for the Tom Waits song, "The Piano Has Been Drinking."

    2) Strauss must have misremembered the song, "Give The Fiddler A Dram" as "Give The Fiddle A...

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

A lot of people have suggested "Cumberland" this or that. You might try "Cumberland Bluegrass," if you play a lot of bluegrass, as that's a nod to one of Grateful Dead's most bluegrassy songs,...
  18. Re: Best piece of advice you've learned here at The Cafe

Very best little bit, nothing to do with mandolins but rather general behavior in this sort of setting (and others, by extension): "Read more, post less." I was already several thousand posts in ;)...

Yeah, I knew that wasn't gonna fly. Shoulda said, "Some philosophers agree." Some will always disagree.

Can we agree on that? :whistling:

No such thing as summing up, around here. ;)

Suitable for framing, though. Also available printed on stainless steel, for hanging by the sink. :whistling:

Re: Needs comments on my inherited Gibson!

I wish you'd shown that view of the headstock before. Logos changed over time, and I believe this style appeared in the 1930s. But the shape is of an older variety, and the finish is a clear...

    Re: Inlay Sticker

The guy Mike recommended has reasonable prices and promises a quick turnaround. For under a hundred more you could have an instrument that looks like it's much more swanky.

    Re: Mandolin and space travel

Wonderful stuff! I have to say, that first shot of the guitar floating down the cabin was pretty scary. Then I realized that without the acceleration of gravity, its speed would not increase...
