Re: Mandolin finger picking with plectra

You might try looking up Radim Zenkl if you haven't already. I'm pretty sure he is a dab hand with fingerstyle, was under the impression he used fingerpicks too, though with single-string courses.

Re: what a real musician can do

Bill, have you looked at Aquila strings? I got a set of viola d'amore strings from them, I think I saw more confusing charts elsewhere (what a recommendation). I've not tried them on yet though so...

    Re: Counterintuitive retuning

If the string is sticking in the nut (sounds likely to me), I would go with the advice already given. To get past any changes that are likely to occur post-tuning, just pull the string away from the...

Re: I fought The Loar..... and it's winning

Hi Mandogar, There is a Hobgoblin in Leeds which isn't far from you, I went there from Derby to get my fiddle and it didn't seem that far anyway.

    Re: Tuning down for shipping?

Along with the above advice, you might want to put something soft between the strings and the top of the instrument to prevent scratching.

Re: Where to find great live music in London?

Hurray! I grew up in Plymouth which leads me to beg the question, why are you going there? For the unassuming Mayflower steps? none of my business but I am very nosey. Watch out for the janners,...

    Re: Choro Sources

Hi Alb, thanks for the suggestions, I did end up getting the Marilynn Mair and Paulo Sa book, as it seemed to be the most readily available over here. I've not gotten much into it yet, it looks like...

Cool, hope you enjoy the instrument! I think it's always reassuring to have had some kind of dialogue with the people you are buying from.

    Re: Nut Replacement

You can shim up the nut quite easily, I'm sure there are better materials but you can put a thin piece of paper under the nut to just raise it up a tad and correct the action that way. I guess a...
  15. Re: Can I put a video of me playing Morrison's Jig on YouTube?

I never made that connection, it makes Morrison's jig sound a bit cheap though.

    Re: Opinions to aid mas

Assuming it comes out of the same factory as the Ashbury octave it should be just fine, Ozark probably has their name on ones like this too. I don't know if that helps put things in context or not,...
  21. Re: The Etiquette of Mandolin Shopping and Playing- Any Advice?

Re: Gotta love the this Classified sales pitch

Selling on ebay - making a profit through a clever description, I'd love to see this applied to a musical instrument.
