  1. Re: New Warren Ellis Tenor: Sonic Blue with 2 PUPs.

    I think this is going to be an inevitable acquisition for me. Love the color and the addition of the second pickup kind of sealed the deal. Just need to unload one the herd, the tough part.

    I...

    Where did you source a 5 string version? Is there a bar or do you just use your palm? Very nice.
  3. Re: Tips for improving melody or lead playing

    Basic rule of thumb is two frets per finger.

    Index = frets 1&2
    Middle = frets 3&4
    Ring = frets 4&5
    Pinkie = frets 6&7

    If you stick to this (assuming we're talking first position) the only...

    Re: Elderly Instruments Experience

    Ken

    Sorry to hear things went south on your first attempt at getting a mandolin. I've never had a bad experience with Elderly, but then again I do live close enough to drive over there.

    As...

    Re: Beautiful Flow of FFCP

    I don't have my mandolin in front of me, but I think there's a similar pattern starting with FFcP1 at the 5th fret in the G string (key of C)

    Re: Anything happening in Chicago?

    Try heading down to the Old Town School and poke around. There's a music shop there and there may be a bulletin board with postings on it.

    Re: Get a Grip

    1) beleive the point the author is trying to make is the intervals remain static but depending on the context or location the tonality of the chord changes (major/minor/dim)

    2) Even in jazz with...
  9. Re: Should a Serious Mandolin Player Learn Classical?

    I think the approach to each instrument is driven by their prevalence in the world at large. Violin has a much deeper reach in the real world and as such has a well defined curriculum for teaching...

    Re: Practice/Multi-Instrumentalist?

    I usually approach playing guitar and mandolin practicing from a tune aspect. I usually pick a couple of tunes and work on the melody and rhythm. Once I have that down, I'll take what ever concepts...

    Re: Chunky neck!

    My Clark and Rigel mandolins have C shaped chunky necks (nearly identical profiles). The Breedlove Quartz I used to own had a chunky neck, but was slightly more V shaped.

    Decent Blue Star Price

    NFI, but this seemed like a decent price for a Blue Star 5-string.

    Not sure where it would be applicable to mandolin, but it's a great article. I read it last week at the recommendation of co-worker.

    Slightly related to PB covers, looks like the boys are going to open for Wilco at Red Rocks in June. That would be my dream concert for sure.
