    Re: Flatbacks of note

According to Dave Hynds, "Cyrano" was a German trade mark. What's interesting is the 5th course - a single "C," I assume. Never seen that before:

  3. Re: New-ish "NewYorker" Mandolins from Gretsch

Thanks, Mike. I was intrigued by the solid mahogany construction. I have a 1950's "Bobby Henshaw" baritone uke made from mahogany and like the tone a lot - also made in New York, oddly enough.

  4. New-ish "NewYorker" Mandolins from Gretsch

For holidays and such, my current "risk-having-it-crushed-to-death-at-check-in" mandolin is an Epiphone MM30 - mahogany back and sides with a spruce top. But I really like the look of the new G9310...

Exact opposite experience for me - fiddling around in fiddle-land for too many years seems to have eradicated what little i thought I knew about the mandolin - chord structures and progressions in...

    Re: Verdi's "A" - bowlback mandolins

I've seen a few of your videos - I think I'd flunk the audition to your band.

It might also be a case of "olde ears." Loud bass and high frequency notes can really hurt sometimes - a speedy...

I once saw a Youtube video of an elderly gentleman talking about his Bill Monroe Limited Edition Mandolin to his family - I'd guess - all gathered round a kitchen table. And while I'd love to own...

    Re: Verdi's "A" - bowlback mandolins

Yes - particularly the treble notes. The other thing I noticed was the sweet spot shifted down a bit, past the sound hole and over the top of the pick guard.

    Verdi's "A" - bowlback mandolins

Difficult, I know, but if all the mystic crystal blather associated with Verdi's "A" can be pushed aside for a moment, 432hz sounds altogether kinder to the ear when played on my bowl back than that...

Will Bill's rattlesnake rattle be included, I wonder ... that would be some serious ju-ju for the mojo-less.

You can also "cadge" arrangements off the internet - being sure to call it "research:"

    Re: Speed Neck

Thanks - always wanted to do this to my Loar but imagined it would be a much more complicated … sticky … procedure. Mandolin is smooth as silk and smelling slightly of beeswax - win-win.
