Welcome to the cafe!! Don't get your heart set too much one one particular brand or style of mandolin. Get out and play and listen to many different ones, then you can decide based on the info you...
I've got an AKG C 414 XL II that works great and has 5 polar patterns, which makes it a great do all mic. It's a wee bit more than the 200 bones you were talking about, but you get what you pay for....
If Bill Monroe's F-5 that was smashed into 200-some-odd pieces can be repaired, just about anything can be!
Maybe they'll contract Bruce Weber...he knows a thing or two about Gibson mandolins :)
I completely agree, they are nice for the money. Just doesn't '"fit" me to my liking.
Well, the Buddy Davis wasn't what I was looking for, unfortunately. Fortunately, the seller is an outstanding gentleman and is taking her back. I was lucky enough to stumble on a Ward Elliott...
I just purchased a Ward Elliott Stelling from The Mandolin Store. It's #96 and is a 1997 model. It has a varnished finish, 1 3/16" nut and flat fretboard. Does anyone know what tops Ward may have...
I'm diving in head first for the Buddy Davis, gonna try it out at least. I really like every Taggart I've heard but even used you're looking at a $3000 price difference between the Davis and Taggart....
He has some clips with bands on his site but it's not real great recordings. Just trying to get an idea of the overall tone. Are they full sounding? Would they compare with a Taggart? Any opinions...
WOW!! That's gorgeous!! Happy pickin'!
All in all it's what YOU like for what and how you play and your budget. I too have a Bourgeois guitar and agree you get more attention to detail and a very quality build from a smaller outfit like...
Are you guys still talking about the Gallatin? That's old news! Let's not spend so much time a bickerin' and spend some more time a pickerin'!! :mandosmiley:
Awesome job Ken! WOW! Maybe I should've held out for this one. One thing though... don't be alarmed but there's a pick stuck to the fret board! Hopefully that will buff out okay. :))
Lefty,
Do you have a pic of the ring? I'm just not picturing it as working all that well. Thank you my friend!
Pat
You can thank fellow cafe member, Brett Byers, for the incredible finish job! Thanks Brett!!!
Beautiful Doug! I hope my first looks half that good.
$1500!! Isn't that high for it's condition? It looks pretty rough. There's one that appears to be in better shape that went for $1000 recently.
All of you are most helpful!
I have to say I am somewhat deterred from "schools" for the simple fact you are force fed a lot all at once and there would be no way to learn everything you need...
Didn't I hear a joke about the Kentuckian, Eastman and the Loar??
I had to rest my fingers for a few, so I figured I'd share my new baby with you guys. It's a Big Sky distressed. The distressed look may not be for all of you, but I'm sure you'd all agree it sounds...
I am interested in mandolin making and acoustic steel string guitar construction. I would like to serve an apprenticeship to fully take in all the intricacies of the craft. Many of the schools I've...
Stelling S-5. Not mine, but killer nonetheless.
