Thanks! That looks similar to the one I saw, though it has not been cleaned up in a while.
I'll pass on the info!
Take care,
Frank

I work with a friend who's husband had an old mandolin formerly belonging to his grandmother. I ask to see it and she brought it to work the other day.
It is an old Gibson A(oval)-bodied mando...
Thanks John, I'll give him a call!
Take care,
Frank
Yep, I had Eric put on a "naked" rosewood fretboard with rosewood binding. Its a very sweet combo! I did put that in my estimate request to Ken so that might be why the quote is $300ish.
Not that...
Thanks Ed,
Will definitely follow up on this. Might take a couple months, though.
Hadn't really thought about changing the fretboard radius. I can tell the difference on my mandos, though, &...
I've gotten one estimate for aprox. $300 for the neck re-fret & setup. I don't really have an idea of what a job like that should cost.
Does $300 sound about right to you guys?
Frank
Eric,
Thanks for the reply!
I'll check Denny out with a few of my "contacts" in PC. Do you live near there?
Frank
Thanks Ed,
Might give Ken a call & get an estimate. The guitar is "special," especially to me, but I'm not sure if its "very precious." :-) It is my first good guitar & I suspect it will be with...
Hey Eric,
What has been your experience with Denny? I get to PC often.
Thanks,
Frank
Thanks Ed,
Have you used Ken's services? Where is he located? The web page doesn't give much info.
Frank
I'm posting this in the hopes that someone will be able to point me in the direction of a good person to do a re-fret (& setup) on an oldish Martin D-18 that I have. It's sporting a custom 1 3/4"...
Thanks pickinNgrinnin,
Great to know! I haven't seen anything like that happening yet, but I'll keep checking. At least I can cover it with some cloth or something.
I really wish there was an...
I signed up a while back and really enjoyed it. It got me started for sure. I eventually dropped it because I just didn't *make the time* for it. I also didn't take advantage of the video critiques...
Very nice! I have an '83 1SH & had a md-514sb. Looks like you're an oval-hole guy, too!
Take care,
Frank
Nice! Love those Webers!
Maybe someday. :-)
Enjoy!
Frank
Not certain but I think it has more to do with the model than the year. The basic models I've seen have the black name & the higher grade mandos have the white.
Of course, I could be wrong....
Just a quick follow-up. I've been using the Essick unit mentioned in earlier posts now for a couple of weeks & its been terrific. I put it in a guest bedroom right next to my music room & across the...
Spoken like a man who owns the super 5-latch version! :-)
I'm keeping my "vintage" chipboard case in a vault to maintain its value . . .
Later,
Frank
Congrats on the MW! I really do enjoy my 1SH!Mine came with the original chipboard case, too. I really never found a case that really fits the Flatiron, but eventually contacted Steve at Cumberland...
Got this unit delivered Friday & finally got it going this morning. RH rising slowly but looks like it will work well for what I need. Currently up from aprox. 25% to 30%.
Frank
I've used credit cards as shim stock, as well. Good thickness & few, if any voids.
Frank
It sure has! I'm a teacher & we're off again today, not because of snow but low temps. Can't have the kiddies waiting for their buses in -20 or so degrees!
I'm supposed to be getting the Essick...
Oh no! I can't afford my mandos sounding worse! They already sound pretty rough when I play 'em! :-)
Frank
Sounds good to me. We'll experiment with placement after we get it. The 2 rooms I really want it for are next to each other on one end of the house so I think a larger unit like the Essick should...
Yep, mine reads 25%. :-(
Time to order.
