Re: Lyon & Healy Style B

My mandola does not have the pin, but the L&H mandola pictured in the Gruhn/Carter book (no serial number given) does. So, some mandocellos and mandolas have them, and some don't.

Re: Gibson "The Virginians" H-4 ?

As per the front page, it's back:

Same pictures as before, seller has zero feedback. Scam? Nearandfar, are you the seller?

Re: Lyon & Healy Style B

I have seen such a pin on an (early) L&H mandocello as well... doubtful the ergonomics work right for sticking that in your watch pocket! Seems to suggest knee rest is the intended use.

    Also, a...

Re: Loar signed Mandola at Mandolin Brothers

Don't forget the one at Gruhn's:

Pretty cool to have three on sale at the same time. As far as I can see, the one at Carter is the same price as the one...
  5. Re: Lyon and Healy Tailpieces: Differences Pre- and Post- Patent

I thought people might be interested in what a Lyon and Healy Style A mandola tailpiece looks like.

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Alto Mandolin/Mandola Strings

I am trying to find the perfect set of strings for my Lyon and Healy Style A mandola. It has a 15.75" scale length.

I started out with the "Jazzdola" JD13 strings that Ted used to supply. ...
  7. Re: Difference between early Lyon & Healys vs. "Washburn"/later L

This short-scale Style C on Ebay is interesting to me for a couple of reasons:

    1. Only Style C I've seen that has the metal pull-out extension on the side (for resting on your lap, watch pocket,...

Gibson K4 Mandocello with Virzi on Ebay

Was excited to see this auction this morning on ebay for a late 20's K4 mandocello with virzi.

It's in the archive (#83272), but sans the pictures on ebay.

By the end of the day, though, the...

Re: Dating the Lyon & Healy

Mistake. That looks like a long-scale instrument to me (see position of twelfth-fret markers). Plus, description says "asymmetrical," but picture is of a symmetrical instrument. I suspect there's...
  10. Re: Difference between early Lyon & Healys vs. "Washburn"/later L

In response to an earlier post, Style C's certainly came in both long and short-scale versions.

For instance, here is a short-scale C for sale at a very reasonable price (no financial interest):...
  11. Re: Difference between early Lyon & Healys vs. "Washburn"/later L

I thought that earlier L&H mandos had the nice thin varnish, but that later examples were lacquer. This, I would think, would be a basis for a preference for buying an earlier model. I don't know...

Re: Lyon and Healy two point

I have a long-scale symmetrical L&H (pictures of which are in another thread).

Mine sounds nothing like a tenor banjo. I agree with Jim that it might have been the strings you were using. I use...

I saw this when it first went up on the Mandolin Brothers website, and I also have been earnestly hoping somebody would buy it soon and remove the temptation. I agree that price is on the low side...

    Re: L&H tailpiece cover

    Too much.

If someone had a pre-patent tailpiece-with-cover combination in perfect condition, with the felt still on and the original screws, maybe I'd be tempted.

Link in the ad now goes to a standard style A, not a De Pace. Looks like the De Pace picture in the cafe ad is just an accident.

Re: Parting With a Cherihsed Instrument

    Re: D'Angelico mandolin Registry

Mandolin Brothers has changed the date to circa 1939. Not unreasonable, given that #125 is from early 1940. Serial # lists suggest he was making about 10-13 mandolins a year at that point (at...

  20. Advice on getting a mandolin from Canada to the United States

    Re: Mando in "Piano Man"
