If money isn't an issue, I would choose the Ellis F5. I've played several of them and they were all fantastic mandolins.

I had one of the earlier Master Models (s/n 83 I think) and tried to swap out the cast tailpiece with a James. The holes didn't align properly on that particular instrument. I returned the James and...
LeonEvans, that is one beautiful Ellis F5. I bet it sounds great also.
I also like the D'Addario EXP74cm's on my Ellis A. I tried a set of the original GHS that Tom recommends but they didn't suit my taste. Also they go dead a lot faster than EXP's. My two cents worth.
I finally put some EXP74Cm's on the Ellis A5. I do like them. They seem to have a more balanced tone on the Ellis.
Not 1953 but 1963. Hard to learn mandolin a year before birth.
1. Weber Bigsky
2. Weber Fern
3. Weber Custom Fern
4. Northfield Master Model #83 (modern setup)
5. Ellis A5 #345
I've owned many more guitars and banjo's than mandolins over the years. If I...
I was wondering the same thing?
I have digital hygrometers in multiple rooms. I will leave my mandolin, acoustic guitar out of case sometimes during the day if the humidity is between 35% and 45%. If outside those numbers I will...
Another good one on youtube by a beautiful blonde:

I would think the Montana Weber's will be more sought after this. I had 1 Big Sky and 2 Fern's (one being custom with one piece back, cedar top, slightly larger radius, 1 3/16" nut width) which I...
I just recently recorded a video while using the Zoom H2 for audio. I used a Samsung Note 3 for video. Audio on the Note 3 is awful bright and thin. Dumped both files into Adobe Premiere Elements 11....
If you're thinking of replacing the Northfield tailpiece with a James keep in mind the holes may not match exactly. I tried to do this on a Master model #83 and they didn't match. I just sent the...

Mark,
How does your Mowry compare to the Ellis A tone wise? He makes some beautiful mandolins too.
You may have not seen mine because Dennis knew I was looking for one and email me before it got posted. As soon as the images got loaded I purchased it. It was up on the site less than an hour. You...
Thanks for the info. I will give them a try. When I get a new mandolin I like to experiment with strings trying to find the best for that particular instrument. I like coated strings because I kill...
I contacted Ellis and they said it was originally shipped on 9-1-15 to Carter's. I purchased it used from Dennis Vance at the Mandolin Store where it was on consignment just over a couple weeks ago....
I've owned in the past two different Weber ferns and I liked the wood nymph for a palm rest. If you just want to get rid of the harmonics just buy cheap rubber grommets which works just as good.
Very nice selection Mark.
I've owned 4 different F5's over the past 10 years. Now I'm just playing an Ellis A5 that I like tone wise.

One of my all time favorites.
Thanks for the info.
Michael, great sounding Northfield and some good clean picking. May I ask what brand of strap you are using? I'm getting an A5 mandolin and have been looking for a strap. Thanks, Nick.
An Ellis mandolin would definitely be something to look forward too. I knew chemo wouldn't be a cakewalk going in. Thanks for the encouragement. Tom Ellis imho is a great luthier that has surrounded...
