Hi Allen- I don't understand why it would be anachronistic. Were there no mandolins in...
"BTW, this show is not - I repeat, NOT - about our kind of pickers. This is about two guys who go picking through junk to find things of value. Somehow I haven't managed to find time to watch this...
I have a Ditson Victory mandolin serial # 8319. Any ideas on how to find out how old it is? Thanks- Mike
Thanks for the good advice.
I have a Martin mandolin A style from the 40s war years. A buddy wants to buy it. I seldom play it as I have a couple of Gibsons. It sounds great and is in good shape, one small stable crack on the...
Why would anyone think that anything Ricky did on the mandolin was an accident?
The Band did a great cover of Bruce's "Atlantic City" with the two guys from the Hooters, one of whom plays wonderful mandolin rhythm and riffs. It's a killer cut. (I like it better than either of...
I have some live CDs of Lindley and Ry Cooder in a smoking duo. Unreal stuff. Mandolin and lap steel in the hands of some masters!
Thanks for the great leads.
Now I've got to come up with the cash for 20 new CDs!
I love the Monroe brothers and Bill with Doc Watson. Any other recomendations of strictly mandolin and guitar county duos? (I have Jerry and Dog's stuff too.) thanks
I'd advise you to check out a used OM for bar/outdoor instruments. I got a Flatiron last year for around $800 and it is a fine instrument.
Check put http://www.irishtune.info/ This is the sort of site that gives the truth to the expression "More time on their hands than they know what to do with." It is a priceless resource.
Thanks for all the info. I ordered a K&K Mandolin Twin and it looks like just what I need. Again, thanks- Mike
I have an old beat up, non-colectable Gibson A-1 I'd like to put a pickup on. To best explain what I'm looking for, let me say that I have a Martin guitar with a Martin under the saddle pickup which...
What would be a good interface tool from a mic into a PC?
I only need one channel at a time, but might eventually move to more. Thanks- Mike
The instrumental parts that really stick in my mind from S & C are the tasty guitar licks Louie Shelton played. He was a master of timing and taste.
Try hopping into the reel Over The Moor to Maggie.
A 106 year old mandolin player. I reckon that comes to about 46 years of tuning.
Apparently everyone on this site is loaded. You asked for entry level ideas. I have a 6 channel Peavy powered mixer I bought used for $200 on Ebay. They never die. I waited for a sale on a pair of...
I always liked..."Some A holes have F holes"
I was amazed by his hands too. He seemed able to stretch the length of the fingerboard without shifting. But the clearness of his phrases and the "rightness" of his choices were what really struck...
I saw Tal near the end of his playing days. He was still awesome. Just plain tasty unassuming jazz. His stuff with The Red Norvo Trio with Mingus is timeless in quality and conciseness. He was a...
If you like The Red Violin, read Accordian Crimes by Annie Proulx. Better treatment of the same idea, and a fine feel for music and musicians.
I am lucky enough to have started playing with a great piper to emulate. Roy Rogers in Phila was a great open and giving guy who welcomed me into the session world. Nothing helped my early attempts...
Try to find a used Princeton Reverb. 30 years into mine and I have seldom heard a better tube sound for strings. Just my $.02.
