I know that my son's orchestra teacher (a professional violist) would tune the younger children to 430 instead of 440. His reasoning was that kids/untrained violinists always were a bit off, and the...
First time I ever played "Friend of the Devil" was busking in 1980, in Sachsenhausen, FRG (suburb of Frankfurt aM). I was playing a 12 string, Randy (last name lost to antiquity) on mandolin and...
T.D., banjo players know when to stop....when the beer runs out.
Requiescat in pace, serve bone et fidelis...
It Won't Be Long (Take 2) Frank Stokes. Got it down for the guitar, now trying to do it on the mandolin. (Also working on the lyrics).
Love Frank Stokes, great musician, great lyricist...
For me, it's A all the way. Just love the feel and sound. Of course the first mandolin I ever picked up at age 6 was an A style, so that may have something to do with it.
Praktis makes purrfeck they sez, but I dunno
When I saw the "What's for supper?" line, I was reminded of Grampa Jones on "Hee-Haw"....but I guess that is dating myself (which, at my age, is the best kind of date I can hope for!)
Anyway, this...
Ever cents I took the Evlinn Woodhead spedredding coorse, my redding has improv-ed 100 pro sent. And also comprension.
Hmm.... Ok, being a multi-instrument player, like many here, I must say I found the mandolin easy to learn...impossible to master, but easy to learn. Of course, that was after playing fiddle for a...
This thread will generate more answers than there are members of the forum. Best advice I could give you is to find a store that has more than one brand, pick them up and play them. Buy the one...

59, but some days it feels like 90...other days, 20. Lots of miles on this old body, orthopedic wise. The internals are all good, it's just the body that is in rough shape. Too many jumps off the...
Playing the streets is about entertaining the crowd enough to get a good pitch....the nice thing is that if you are working up a song, you can play it every four or five songs because the crowd...
Downloaded all three, love them. THANK YOU!!!!
Wow....
I was going to reply, but forgot what I wanted to say....
But, truthfully, I have had this happen to me, not so much playing (but a few times) but doing a play. My "big entrance" was to say "Good...
as a sorta fiddle player, I would say stay with notation. Fingering for mandolin is like fiddle music, and properly notated is no more difficult than tab...and the richness of notation provides more...
since you are no stranger to sheet music, I would for sure recommend not using tab and just learning the standard notation for the mandolin. Not that tab is "bad" but standard notation (at least for...
Not sure if it is still open, but in Sachsenhausen the Irish Pub WAS a great place to meet pickers....
If it is it's a great place to pick and have a pint.
I think that they both suffered a bit when they broke up, as far as "creativity" is concerned...but I would have to say McCartney was the better "musically" of the two, only in that he kept...
I did the bar (pub) thing in Germany for a while. Wonderful experience, but at the end of the day, I am glad I had a day job and didn't depend on making my living doing it. I did get an offer of...
this is a serious question? There can be only one correct answer (from a music point of view) and that would be the Beatles. The Stones were good, for what they were, but as far as musical genius,...
