I've been admiring Elkhorn mandolins for some time. For those of you who have played one, how do they play and sound (compared to F5's by other top builders)?
Thanks
Yes it is Tim O'Brien. That is the Psychograss recording that the OP mentioned; whoever posted it on youtube didn't label is as accurately as they might have.....
Thanks I'll try that.
For me, nothing beats this version:

Both the mandolin and violin knock me out.

Does anyone have a chord chart for Sam Bush's version of "Sailin' Shoes"?
I last had contact with him just before his site went away last fall. Did you try the phone number listed in the mandolincafe database ((231) 824-6085)? I would think that would be the best bet. He...
I corresponded with Paul last fall. he mentiond that he wasn't going to maintain his website further. I would suggest contacting him by phone (which I assume is listed in the mandolincafe builder...

Funny to find this stuff here. I've always loved this one.
Here is a clip I recently found, of Ry on OM:

It's not blues, but it's good.
Ry is one of my favorite guitarists. Is he playing an octave mandolin in this clip?

I'm in SLC, and have heard that Ezra is quite a player; if I'm not mistaken, his father is the maker of Old Wave mandolins.

I owned a Newson F5 that was custom-built for me. It was a fine mandolin in every way. Paul trained as a violin builder, and seems to approach each instrument as a unique undertaking. The finish he...

I've had mandolins built by Paul Newson, Michael Heiden, Andrew Mowry, and Steve Holst. In each case there was excellent communication with the luthiers, timely delivery of the mandolins, and great...
Amoeba also put that Belleville Rendez-Vous recording on this CD:

He makes beautiful mandolins. Can anyone tell me about the tone of his F-5's? Traditional or otherwise?

Great looking Mowry, Steve M! I hope mine ages to that, although it spends too much time in the case ......

Hi h2O:
The Mowry has a traditional F5 tone, with that poppy component that I attribute to the Engleman top.
The Holst has a different feel to the neck and a bit more sustain and warmth,...
