Re: Can I remove/re-attach tailpiece at home?

I think it should be said that the strings should be removed BEFORE taking off the tailpiece. It's really obvious, but it should be mentioned nonetheless.

I've said it in the other thread, I'm going to have to back down, I ended up getting an IV kit.

Re: Anyone know anything about this kit?

I think I'll have to back out on this one. I've decided instead to get an IV kit, their service seems a little more reliable.

Re: building a mandolin from scratch

I recommend the book "constructing a bluegrass mandolin" by Roger Siminoff. I've read about halfway through and in comparison to some of the other lutherie books I've read (eg. Ukulele Design and...

    Re: Neck reshape questions (LM600)

I'd say do what big joe says, use a scraper. I use a spokeshave, but that may take off too much material.

Re: I carved down to this

I'm no expert, but I'd leave it - sometimes the little blemishes make something unique. Why is it that you can't leave it?

I think perhaps just using a colour matched wood filler is a good idea,...

Re: Anyone know anything about this kit?

ME, I'd like to get a handle on the mandolin before thinking of building one from scratch, I'd prefer an F, but an A is doable if you have to get a bunch of the same ones. I'm not sure about money...

Re: Has Anyone Built a Cigar Box Mandolin?

I have not built one yet, but I plan on it.

Others have as well, but I have yet to see very many of them.

Re: Anyone know anything about this kit?

I'm a little tempted to get either an A or an F myself - seems like a bit of a better idea than building one from scratch from a cigarbox.
  12. Re: Interesting eBay auction for Breedlove kit [about to end]

I saw this auction just last night, while I was looking at mandolins on ebay. There is actually one I just might buy, but about this one I was a little taken aback, I was wondering if it were legal,...

Re: F mando kit on eBay...

they probably don't have an F-style kit, I've never seen one, but it makes me think of one - I guess if Saga were to make an F-style it would look a lot like that.

Re: F mando kit on eBay...

looking at that kit makes me think of a Saga. I'm really not sure, but Sagas generally tend to be good in terms of build quality, though hardware can tend to need improvement.

    Re: New Army Navy

That looks really nice! I like the army/navy style mandos, they've got some element to them that a lot of archtops seem to lack.

Would they even ship large quantities of wood? Particularly, would they even ship large quantities of wood into Canada?

thanks for the corredction, like I said I'm no expert, and I try to learn something new every day.
  19. Re: Lighter parallel band on spruce top ... what's this?

/\ did not think of that one, I figured it could have been sapwood - but of course I think most people would be smart to avoid that sort of thing. I'm no expert on the subject, but it doesn't seem...
