    Re: Django's banjo

Do you think they wanted the sound or the banjo or just the extra volume of a banjo?

    Restring mandolin as mandola?

I have an old resonator mando. The high E courses are really bright and tinny. Can I restring it CGDA, like a mandola? Anything I need to be aware of if I do that?
  5. Re: how do 'hot club' type units approach arranging?

I play in the QHCF-inspired quintet, the Jill Martini Soirée. The charts are just head charts, most of the intros, harmony licks, etc. may be worked out in rehearsal, but it's all done by memory....

    Re: Paris Swing Mandos

Lovin' my PS JJ. replaced the tuners, but it still needs to go to Mr. Repairman for a fret dress and pickup install.

All the mando parts on the Jill Martini Soiree CD "It's The Mood" are the PS JJ!

At the risk of resurrecting a zombie thread for Halloween......

I played a steampunk gypsy jazz gig yesterday, and this thread gives me crazy ideas for my old metal National Duolian mandolin. I...

    Tailpiece for National RM-1

The original tailpiece on vintage National mandos has always been a weak spot. Is the tailpiece that National used on the RM-1 available as a separate part? It looks good 'n' sturdy

Where's the best place to buy K&K mandolin pickups? Is there a noticeable difference between the Twin Internal (two heads) and the Big Shot Internal (one head)?

    Re: Gypsy Jazz Scales

It's more about arpeggios and the ornaments than scales. I find, scale-wise, that I use the chromatic scale mixed in with arpeggios more than any exotic gypsy-minor scales. Maybe the diminshed scale,...

Re: Anyone Installed a K&K Twin in their Mandolin?

I don't have a K&K in my mandolin yet. I do have the K&K Pure Maccaferri Trinity system in my Gitane DG300, and I like the sound of the piezo better without the K&K prepamp than with it.
