  1. Re: Builders in Cuba (mandolin, tres, or other)

So now I´m back after having a great time and here´s what I saw:

As Paul said, the quality of the instruments for the most part is very low. The ones that are for sale for the tourists are...
  2. Re: Builders in Cuba (mandolin, tres, or other)

    Thanks Paul,

so far I found a guitar and violin workshop mentioned in my guidebook, which appears to ber located way off the beaten track. As that is not what I´m looking for, I´ll probably go to...
  3. Builders in Cuba (mandolin, tres, or other)

    Hi everybody,

I´m going for vaccation to Cuba in a couple of weeks and have always been intrigued by Cuban stringed instruments, particularly the tres and the tiple. I would love to check out some...

Think back to all your favorite/classic recordings. Think back to your favorite songs/tunes. It wasn't the recording quality that stood out, it was the song/tune. ...
  5. Re: Making plans (homerecording a CD - advice needed)

So true! With my previous bands, I always recorded in the studio, and if I was in a band now, I wouldn´t give homerecording a second thought - too much hassle for lo-fi results!

    As you realised by...
  6. Re: Making plans (homerecording a CD - advice needed)

Well, I´m not ruling out going that way - but I tried to set up audacity on my laptop, and sometimes it would work, sometimes not. Sometimes it would crash, sometimes not. I just found that it took...
  7. Re: Making plans (homerecording a CD - advice needed)

Darn! I guess, a live mixer (Mackie) will probably not do, as the quality of the preamps and the other components is crucial. So that would set me back another 1000 $ or even more? Any other options?
  8. Making plans (homerecording a CD - advice needed)

My first post here for quite some time, and I really appreciate your input cause this definitely pushes me out of my comfort zone:

I´m thinking about recording a CD with Mandolin (me) in a duo or...

Can we? It amazes me how often people make broad and very firm assumption about Bill Monroe and what he was thinking based on the NPON quote, which becomes an annoying discussion-killer btw.

    Bill...

First, you don´t need the Schertler preamp (I have one!). Whatever it does doesn´t amount to much at least for mandolins. Instead I´d suggest to get a decent parametric EQ (used, if you are on a...
