    Re: Bluegrass Jam…just kidding.

I participate in a weekly Monday afternoon jam. We mostly do Bluegrass songs and some fiddle tunes but we drift into old time country or folk. We have a couple of guys that used to have a group that...

    Re: My new Pava F5!

I got to play it a little at Acoustic Music Camp. It's very nice right out of the box. The fit and finish were excellent. It played very easy and had a ton of sound. It's only bound to get better.

Re: My wonderful experience at Carter's Vintage

I was there this time last year. The best "Gibsun" I played in the high end room was a (clearly marked) fake. I forget who made it but, as I recall, it was a mid '70s instrument and sounded great.

Re: best new f-5 style bridge (arched)

Sounds like the OP solved his problem but since the the question was about best new bridge available, let me opine. If, like me, the heavy sharpe shoulder of a Gibson style bridge cuts/pushes...
  5. Re: Mando Tasting Notes... Wow. 35 Mandolins in a day.

How were the tuners? I was there in the spring and I was surprised at how hard some of these $3K and up (way up) mandos were to tune. Thought I'd need channel locks for some of them. I'll put up...

Get the best mandolin in your price range for which you can hear a positive difference. Make sure all components work well, particularly the tuners. Earlier this year I was at a well known Nashville...

Wimberley was her home base but her mama took her around to other jams too. She was unfailingly polite and never, never precocious (in the negative sense which word is often used). Everybody knew she...
  8. Re: Beginner question:Should the right (picking) hand hit the bri

The Gibson style bridges really cut into my hand. When I had mandos with that style bridge, I used a modeler's wood rasp to really break that sharp edge and the sandpaper to polish. To me, that just...
  9. Re: Mandolin players that play other fretted instruments

I find that playing mandolin and guitar helps both. I also think it makes me have to think notes instead of fret position.

Re: A 10 year old ellis and a 15 year old gibson

I've had the opportunity to play both of these instruments. They are superb examples of the art. Gibsons are scarce in these parts so getting to play a great one was a treat. The Ellis is a little...

I'll bring it to Steve's Monday night. You should bring your Uke. They are very similar in size so they should go well together.

Clifford Mandolinetto ca 1900 or so...

I recently acquired this Mandolinetto from Guitar Tex in San Antonio. It was in sad, unplayed shape when they got it but they worked their magic and put it back pretty close to right. I saw it in a...

    Re: Armrests and tone gards?

The appropriate place to put the armrest, it's where your arm crosses the bout. You want to center it so that your arm crosses through the middle of it, that's where it will be the most comfortable....

I've seldom been sentimental about things. I just have found for my satisfaction I need to focus on a limited number of instruments.

    Goodbye Mandola

I traded off my mandola today. It played beautifully and sounded great but I just never got into it. I made an effort over this holidays to play it more but it just seem like work. I hate the thought...

Re: Evaluating Mandolins at the Store

I shop slowly. When I get serious, I do a lot A/B comparisons, tunes, phrases, chords, etc, etc. First just by myself and then I get somebody to play for me. Always compare to my primary instrument....
