  1. Re: Value of a Gibson A Mandolin 1916 vintage

Don't feel bad. I saw the big feeding frenzy that was going on for vintage instruments myself. I had(have?) this idea that I could maybe supplement my income if I ever retire by restoring old...
  2. Re: Value of a Gibson A Mandolin 1916 vintage

But that was 5 years ago and probably was a good deal then. This is now and prices of vintage but not particularly collectable instruments is way down.

    Re: Serial Numbers

I don't know if paranoia would be a fair term. The odds of an individual actually getting caught up in a particular scam are probably or at least usually pretty small. The possibility that if there...

    Re: Serial Numbers

I spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out a scam that could be done if all you had was the description of an instrument and the serial #. It'd probably take at least another 15 minutes to actually...

    Re: 1924 Gibson A Snakehead

Do you play the mandolin? If your thinking that it's a possible investment you might be a little bit disappointed. Elderly's might have one for $2600 but your not Elderly. The listed price on...

This puppy is pretty beat. People pay a lot for not very good vintage Martins I guess because really truly good vintage Martin's sell for a whole lot more but not these. In better shape than that an...

    Re: Doug Unger Mandolin??

There are Duffs and Ellis's, Gils and Dudes and Henderson's and a few others that most of us can name and they all cost. There is a small but elite group of very top of the line instrument builders. ...

    Re: A 70's F12 for $5000! Really!

What type of appraisal? Some appraisals are mainly for insurance purposes. If your item is lost in a fire or stolen what would it cost to replace it quickly and easily, not haggling for a deal or...

Who says pawn shops are experts at value pricing? They are pawn shops, the place where you take your stuff when your really down and out. They are experts at judging desperation and the more...

    Re: A 70's F12 for $5000! Really!

I purchased a handmade '70's Bernie Rico built brazilian dread off of ebay for $960 and it turns out to have been a very good deal for me as I prefer it over my '67 D28. There's a guy with an...
  14. Re: Unusual Harmony-made Mandolin - Jen Larson & Michael Daves

But the inlay, at least on mine, was the best part! Giant eagle on the back, a flock of birds flying up the finger board. Maybe a little gaudy but pretty impressive just the same. If I ever get it...
  18. Re: Lloyd Loar and Gibson Corp dynamic during his tenure there...

Lloyd Lore held no patents from what I've heard. The truss rod was patented by Gibson prior to Loars tenure so that seems to have been something already in the works. For businesses to stay in...

    Re: Blue chip picks

The material is called Meldin 7001. I looked into it a year or so ago and that sheet was under $1400 then. 10" x 10" you should be able to get 100 picks out of that, maybe more with precise machining.

  25. Re: Has anyone tracked the market value of Loars over time?

So we have one selling recently (according to the above post at $120,000) and some apparently selling at $250,000. That's a lot of change for a mandolin! The price stalled but then so did the...
