Re: Hadn't played a mandolin in 69 years...

I'm glad this thread is still in the archives. Sadly, but not unexpectedly, Aunt Georgie passed away this week at age 90 after being put on hospice. Though her memory was fading the last year, she...

    Re: Firewood mandolin

I've got mp3 recordings of the first jam of the week with the Firewood Mando -- anybody know how to insert mp3 files here?

    Re: Firewood mandolin

I think they work well. I didn't notice anything different in the feel other than it felt very playable and easy on the left hand. I think other differences in instruments such as neck shape and...

    Re: Galax Fiddler's Convention

An original tune, don't tell the Moose, ha! Wrote it in Eb, called the Gingerbread Rag. Wish I could find a video of it.

    Re: Firewood mandolin

Got to try out the firewood mando this week! It was extremely nice, felt good inthe hand and projected a powerful and balanced tone. I could tell it's new, but it has that certain tone that tells...

    Re: Galax Fiddler's Convention

Good year this time around. Didn't do the band contest this year. Got lucky and came back with 5th in the mandolin. I've played better and got nothing, so you never can tell. Played until 6:00 AM...

    Re: Firewood mandolin

Excellent pictography, loved to see the process of log to finished instrument.

You gonna bring that one to Galax? I'd love to "burn up" a tune or two (sorry).

    Re: Galax:

Well, the band contest goes until after midnight, and the picking goes on till very late. Sometimes the picking slows down a little during the awards ceremony, usually 2:00 AM or so, then more...

    Re: Galax:

Saturday, as in the last day of the fiddler's convention, is absolutely crazy crowded, particularly if the weather is nice.. Think Disney World in the summer time kind of crowded. I guess earlier...

Re: Prayer of a mandolin player..

    Lord, grant me the serenity
to accept the mandolins I cannot afford,
the gumption to practice the one I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

    Re: The Right Pick

Alan, you need to take those jokes on stage somewhere so I can get close enough to throw things at you...

I use one of the unmentionable picks too, 1.1mm thick, polished and just barely flexible.
  12. Re: Your strategies/tricks for picking up a tune by ear?

I'm curious now, is this Tim W's class? If so, I take back what I said about it being "strange"... Tim's an excellent musician and teacher, and I'd stand by his methods, even if I didn't understand...

Re: What's going on in the Greensboro NC area.

You've got until the 13th to send in a registration form for competing at Galax, which is your ticket for getting into the park to camp. Costs nothing to register, forms are online, so do it, come...

    Re: Galax:

Galax, of course. I'll be there, camping with the Del-Tones (but we're taking a break this year from the band competition). Hope the heat lets up, I remember 2008 all too well; my wife nearly got...
  15. Re: Your strategies/tricks for picking up a tune by ear?

Sounds like a strange way to practice jamming, since most bluegrass jamming involves a lot of shared repertoire (y'all know this one... nobody? How about this one... OK half of you know it, let's do...

Re: What's going on in the Greensboro NC area.

Man, that's a tough one. When we arrived here 5 years ago, in our 5th wheel, we spent a few days at the only campground close to town, the Greensboro campground off I-40. Everything else was, and I...

Re: What's going on in the Greensboro NC area.

Yea, get on the High Lonesome Strings email list, more things in the area than a person could do. I go to a few festivals in Central NC and VA, plenty to pick from. Shoot me an email if you get...

    Re: A little venting...

"Shouldn't she have been a little more gracious in her response...."

    Yup. A lot more.

Sounds like a very insecure and narcissistic person. Next time come over and pick with us, we were short...
  19. Re: Guitarists who converted to die-hard Mandolin Players first?

Definitely. I played guitar for 10 years before picking up the mandolin. After a couple of intense years of working at the mandolin, it was clear that it was a "fit", and my skills quickly...

    Re: Backwaters, by Tony Rice

That album was my first exposure to Rice or Reischmann; a friend of mine got the LP and I listened to it over at his house. I had only listened to rock and roll before, and played rock guitar...

    Re: Flying with a mandolin...

I've recently traveled by air, 4 times in the last 4 months, and have carried the mandolin with me on every trip with no hassles at all. I use a padded shaped gig bag, and it does not get second...

    Re: humiliation :

A lot of this hits home for me. I may have been able to hold my own with over 90% of the players some years ago, but I can't keep the pace with the new crop of young speed demons coming of age now. ...

    Re: Mangler of bluegrass

Just downloaded it. I'm in the middle of listening now, and I gotta say, Bruce, your tongue in cheek sacrilege is as close to true creative genius as I've heard in a while. It's not only too much...
  24. Re: Mando Re-finish- Question to those who took the plunge

Yes, please post the results, would love to see the carnage, er, the improvements. I joke as I've been there myself.

I took the plunge years ago. Had an early Sigma mandolin, couldn't get past...

    Re: 2010 SPBGMA winners

They scheduled the awards show along side the superbowl? Now there's some planning for you!

Good job for Junior Sisk getting the album award. It's a good 'un.
