Yes, the red ones do it for me, too. I had an nice f-2 as a teenager that had the same coloring. The red ones really seem like they are from another era.

Instead of felt, I found an old camera case with a fairly thin leather strap in my garage, and cut the strap for use as cushioning. Once glued to the clamp, no more worries about scratching.

I'm going to be playing some of those tunes at a wine and cheese gig myself tonight. Its a nice winery nr. Healdburg Calif, Michel Schlumberger, where we play next to a fountain and watch the...
I am no sound expert, but I've played a lot of gigs and have tried to pay attention to what works.
One thing that doesn't get discussed is the dispersion of the speaker with acoustic amps. PA...
Take a look at O'Brien's Nugget, as well as many other pro's. :)
Is it more important to restrain your style so that some future investor will be able to invest in your instrument and store it in...
The scroll break is pretty insignificant, although it looks poorly repaired. That's a very common break and wouldn't bother most buyers. The neck crack is more disconcerting as the cause and repair...
Relative to the problem of subjectivity and what one hears when they're talking about a broken-in instrument: I'm reminded of the discussions about varnished as versus lacquer finishes. In that case,...
...Bottom line, ask questions and know your seller. A real seller has nothing to hide and will give you a phone number and address to contact him. They will send pics that are not in the listing. If...
I prefer a slight radious, but if I like an instrument, then I'll adjust to the fretboard if I can. I have a couple of very old Gibsons and playing those means dealing with a thicker neck and smaller...
It sounds like you might have the pc viewer. I think there is a free mac viewer. This is one program I don't mind paying for, however, as I use it extensively as a practice tool.
When starting in the photography business many years ago, I was advised to bear in mind that, as far as rates go, you're lucky if you can get 3 bill-able days out of the week. When you subtract the...
The question of which is the best amp comes up often on this and other forums, with people responding with their favorites. The usage requirements will trump the amplifier brand concerns, IMO,...
The phenomenon of A strings going high, while counterintuitive, is not rare at all. I noticed it myself and have heard others wondering about it while tuning. It is strange because with most...
This is a great story because most players will have an experience like this at some point. In an effort to win favor with a good player we lower the usual protective shield. In my case, it was a...
I, likewise, had a nice experience purchasing a mandolin from Dennis a couple of years ago. Also one from Retrofret in NY more recently.
The real test of character in our culture, however, is in...
I use the same combination as mentioned: the K&K with a Baggs para DI, also in an Eastman. In my setup the highs are too piercing and I'm turning the treble down on the DI quite a bit. The 815...
This question turns up in the forums for other instruments too. People's tastes for learning methods vary in accordance with their own inclinations; some like paperwork, some don't.
For me,...
I have 2 thoughts, each worth 1 cent:
I believe most of history's big developments can usually be traced to the actions of one person, and those that they've inspired. As versus committee's or...
I have a 1918 A-1 and a 1921 F-4, both purchased about a year ago with money taken out of the stock market (not a bad move in retrospect!). So I've been watching the values with interest.
IMO, the...
I took up the banjo this summer and was interested to learn about the Banjo Hangout which is the counterpart site to this one for that instrument. There are some minor differences, but it also has...

Being a photographer in an area with some luthiers, I've done some instrument photography.
The main point I'd add would be that reflections are not necessarily something you automatically want to...
Ringing out is the process of finding the primary resonant frequency of the your room/setup combination. Every room has a resonant frequency that is working with your PA. That is, there is one...
