    Re: Making picks

My thoughts too. Why would I want to play with a pick made out of an old credit card?

    Re: Goodbye Planet Bluegrass????

I'm getting the feeling that Jon Weisberger is just the last of the traditionalists on the board and has been fighting the devolution of bluegrass that has been apparent in recent years.
  5. Re: musings re. bass at jams, electricity, and carved vs. flat to

If it's a bluegrass jam, it's a bluegrass jam, who are you to tell the folks that like bluegrass that they should change their jam? I think you do the right thing by staying away. If I drag my...
  6. Re: musings re. bass at jams, electricity, and carved vs. flat to

I've been impressed with their sound, the most acoustic sounding electrified bass I've ever heard. I like them.

Re: Some great old Bluegrass for Poco fans.

Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Rusty Young formed Poco after Buffalo Springfield broke up in 1968, not much to do with 'grass. The Squirrel Barkers had some BG creds for sure.

    Re: 1960s Morgan Monroe

It is named after that park and they sure as hell weren't around in the 60's.

Re: Kentucky KM900 or JBovier A5-S?

Why would you worry about the colour? You're supposed to play 'em not look at 'em.
  11. Re: Can this cold dry weather we've been having affect my action?

I live in Alberta with a pretty similar climate and I'd say you definitely need to humidify, year round. I keep my instruments in a room that is humidified to 40-45% R.H all the time and it is needed.

    Re: How long?

At a Monroestyle Mandocamp a few years ago, Bobby Osborne mentioned that he thought Monroe's mandolin was played out, perhaps because of the rebuild or through age.

Skaggs and Rice only made one recording, and it's a classic.

    Re: Gretsch mandolins

Based on the youtube demo I just watched, I'd say no. The sound is terrible, tinny with no mid or low end to it. There have to be better starters out there.

He said musically speaking. I would say that most people don't know who Bird or Django were. I don't believe that popular renown is a good gauge for judging musical influence.
