Re: Not intending to step on any toes....

I think I'll hold off joining until after they go through the first rounds of:
    - A vs. F style
    - What kind of pick
    - Domestic vs. Pac Rim
    - What is Bluegrass
    - Jam etiquette

I've found Edly's book to be the most useful re: theory.

Re: Young Pete Seeger on Mandolin

Has anyone tried to play that song on mandolin? I've worked out a simple version of the melody but, can't figure out how to add some cross-pickin' or drones that sound good.
  4. Re: Sam Bush to do new Homespun DVD lesson - your input?

+1 for Girl from the North Country.

+1 for rhythm and backup as well. Something beyond basic chopping. Like, how to make the mando sound bigger when you're soloing or playing with one or two...

    Mandolin tattoos

In another post someone floated the idea of getting a mandolin tattoo to show affiliation/solidarity to the cafe.

The post was meant as a joke but, it got me wondering ...

    Would an F-style...

    Re: Irish jig books?

    You can try Comhaltas (http://comhaltas.ie/).

They publish tune books with the tunes organized into sets, by song type. They also sell CD's of sessions featuring the songs in the books so you can...
  8. Re: Post your favorite clips from U-Tube, let's start a collectio

The player in this clip is Matt Raum. When I need inspiration for the kind of jam player I'd like to become I watch this.

    I like it b/c:
    a) Not many videos seem to show the mando player chopping...

    Re: The Lone Mandolinist.

I've seen two productions at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and both times music was played onstage, by the actors, as part of the play. It worked really well. It actually would have come...

    Re: Before,after or during ??.

I like changing my strings. For me it's another way of interacting with the instrument, improving it.

Usually, I start with the E string and work my way across. The first pair take the longest...

    Re: Breedlove Quartz OF

I'm quite happy with mine. It has a nice mellow sound to it but can also be quite loud. The chop chords are kind of whoofy which I think is unusual for the Breedlove's (as far as I've read). It's...

    Re: On stage anxiety

This made me laugh. I couldn't help picturing the guitar greats blowing bubbles mid-shred. I think I'll try it :-)

    A Mandolin Coincidence

Like many Americans nowadays I find myself among the ranks of the unemployed.

    Re: Autograph

I have a CD Andy Irvine signed for me during a show at the tiny Rosendale Cafe in Rosendale, NY.

It was a great show as I was ten feet from the stage -- and I was in the back row. I was surprised...
  19. Re: NPR All Songs Considered feat. Mandolin-Banjo

I guess their fact checkers are still on vacation ;-)

Thanks for pointing that out. I sent them a message regarding the error.

  20. NPR All Songs Considered feat. Mandolin-Banjo

The latest NPR "All Songs Considered" podcast features Woven Hand's David Eugene Edwards playing a few songs with a mandolin-banjo.

I second the recommendation for audacity. I recently used it to learn a new tune and it worked great for me. It does a lot of things, most you won't need.
