Probably not the "orthodox" way to play a bowlback but who cares if it necessary or helpfull: it works well and does not make any difference in sound.

There exist old bowlbacks...
#3 has been strung up for only 2 weeks now, so it is still very fresh. #4 is the same instrument with nylon strings which makes it a completely different instrument. I like the sound very much though...
Thank you Bob.
Remember, I'm only playing them. After I had bought the "Ginger" I asked the builder (who wishes to remain anonymous) to make me another instrument with special features: black...
Here a comparison of my 3 "Germans"

Just aririved! Yesterday I picked up my new German bowlback: black rosewood ribs with flamed maple linings, arched spruce top (cant is NOT kinked but carved from solid wood) with rosewood...
Searching for late 18th century work drawings (templates) of Neapolitan mandolins as Domenico Vinaccia.
Does anyone have such or knows how and where to get it?

Maybe the canted and slightly arched top is visible on the pictures.

Wooden pegs - very challenging for steel strings, I know. But I will definitely not only put steel strings on. Already testing the new Aquila Nylgut mandolin strings on one of my bowlbacks and I like...
Another mandolin just off the form...
It's a special order I made. No metal parts except for the frets...

Last week I was searching for the latest posts from Brian - nothing since february. Now this, fantastic! Looks rather "classical" to me (Vinaccia 17xx?). Wood pegs, gut strings?
Actually I'm looking...
We have several threads about the Aquila strings. Here I found an extremely helpfull link (posted by Don) for a loop that made very effectiv restringing easily possible. No issues with E strings...
Don, thank you for this helpful link! The perfection loop really made it possible to fix the Nylgut strings without any issues! Even no problems yet with the E strings.

The Aquila Soprano strings in fifth (with low G) on my "Baroque Ukulele" sound very nice. I bought them on sale last March in England in a shop that was closing down. The G is wound with silvered...
Absolutely my favorite. I couldn't imagine to choose any other mandolin than one of Dan's. Because of the f-holes in first place - they're the most elegant, coherent, well-balanced I've seen so far;...
These strings seem to sound very nice. I will definitely try them soon!
Aquila has a youtube demo of the strings on their webpage:...
Little sound sample with my new German bowlback. Some bars of the 1. Mandolin Part of Prokofiews Morning Serenade from Romeo and Juliet. Unplugged recording in 40sq.m. living room...

Yes but he is extremely modest, not to say shy and not longing for fame. The other point is, that he had decided to spend as much time as possible for another field he is very involved and...
I love to play the Embergher very much and like to practise on it. The fretboard is very comfortable for me (coming from the violin) and it is much easier to reach the high notes because of the slim...
Thank you Mick and Jim.
In fact I didn't want to keep the builders name secret but he asked me not to be "published". So I waited with putting up pictures here until I owned the mandolin, which is...
