    Re: Strings for A2

If the old A is structurally sound, it can take J74s and sound great. In fact, ultra lights will compromise the tone and volume. If the old A does not have enough structural integrity to take the J74...
  2. Re: Learning from tabs versus standard notation - thoughts?

    ,.

It is, perhaps, a weak straw in my education, but when I see the notes on the staff I automatically go to their first position locations. In my violin classes (to date) the only time we crawl...
  3. Re: Does anybody on this forum prefer a pick that is not a bluech

I use a different pick for different kinds of music, for different kinds of tunes within the same genre of music, for different venues and playing situations, and for different mandolins. Blue Chip,...
  4. Re: Little Liza Jane, Goodbye Liza Jane...same song?

Liza Jane was a kind of standard female character in minstrel shows of the 19th century. Sometimes Eliza Jane.
  5. Re: Learning from tabs versus standard notation - thoughts?

Learning standard notation opens the door to an ocean of wonderful music. Just about anything written for just about anything can be picked up and played on mandolin.

But when I want to learn...

    Re: Tone Gard

I think there is a significant "anti-hype" contingent. And I am often in that crowd. I bristle at buying anything that smacks of being popular. That contrarian blood that seeks and embraces the so...

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

I played an open mike under that name.
  10. Re: Learning from tabs versus standard notation - thoughts?

Oh yea. I know folks who can site read tab.

I have always read notation and I am a pretty strong reader in first position, but I find tab very helpful for tunes played up the neck, or in alternate...

    Re: Cleaning the mandolin?

Hmm. I never oil or polish anything. Just the microfiber cloth on the body, and change the strings when they get grody.

I might spray some of that Finger Ease on new strings, but I have forgotten...

It can only help to do 'em both.
  14. Re: Which model BlueChip did you find works best?

I like the TAD 60. Tried the 40 and its almost as good.

    Re: Band name needed.... SOON!

As I recall that video of you guys was great. I wouldn't want to pick a name that is too tricky or too hip that distracts from the solid quality you band really has. Your music has some really stuff...

Re: Advice for playing with a twin brother....

Music like you describe your brother prefers has that component of "angry" to it. That makes crossing over, in either direction, sometimes problematical. It works both ways I think. I am not a fan...
  19. Re: Will someone explain radiused fingerboards to me?

Interesting. I find barre chords easier on a flat fingerboard. On the radiused board its hard for me to match the curve and so I have to push harder.
  20. Re: Will someone explain radiused fingerboards to me?

I have both, and I like both, and I especially like one when I have recently switched to it from using the other for a long time.

The radiused fretboard seems to have some advantages for me in...
  21. Re: Will someone explain radiused fingerboards to me?

Not just etiology, its the entire raison d'etre. There is no other reason for a radiused fingerboard on a mandolin other than folks seem to like them and want them. What ever aesthetic,...

  25. Re: Will someone explain radiused fingerboards to me?

I think this is may be one of those moments where rational thought and language have to be set aside for experience. Instead of trying to understand it, try it. If you don't like it you know...
