RIP Jeff. What a great performer , I so enjoyed the energy of his shows with Yonder and after.
I am a long time Penny pincher myself and go along with Mr Hopkins suggestion of the MXL 990 , I've used them for several years micing a 3 or 4 piece live. Mostly single mic , but sometimes 1 high...
I have flown many times with my mandolin. I travel with an inexpensive instrument, in a cheap superior gig bag. I usually have the body under the seat and the neck sticking between my feet. No...
Ground the tailpiece to the Jack and I bet it cuts the hum.
I like the Idea of the Morely ABC switch, but a small 4 to 8 channel mixer like Behringer is probably what I would do.
Mostly practice mandolin with strap and standing. A good strap position is almost as important as a good setup. As for standing , I almost always perform standing and it feels better for me to play...
Though I like the look of a satin finish, I would go TO for ease of repair
I got a Strad o Lin much like the more expensive of your choices. Identified here on the cafe as a 1942 model, I had to make a new saddle for mine. Mine is the sweetest sounding Mandolin I have ever...
Here in CO, my mandolin go flat as humidity goes down and sharp as humidity goes up. New strings are a must, then if it continues to go flat, something is coming apart. Either top sink neck set ,...
Kustom PA50 with a Behringer ADI21 is great sounding on it's own , has a hole to mount on a stand and an output for a subwoofer should you need one.
I feel a Tascam or Zoom mini recorder is the most flexible and useful choice. The built in mics on my DR7 do a fine job of recording band practice and with appropriate placement gets a good balance....
You got a great deal on that Mandolin! Some good advice too.
Couple in my wallet
I would go with a Tascam DP 006, battery powered 6 Trac. Wish it had xlr inputs but it seems to allow overdub and run on batteries. You could always use a small mixer to run different microphones...
Nothing I read about the Zoom H1n leads me to believe you can overdub (play one track back while recording another) maybe I am missing something but it seems to be about the same as my tascam DR7...
I installed a single piezo disc in my oval hole mandolin, sounds great. I have a bridge pickup on another f type mandolin, it resists feedback better but doesn't sound as good . I feel 1 or 2 discs...
I have audacity and a laptop and it works, but another way to go is a stand alone 8 track by Fostex, tascam or Zoom as well as several others. I have a Fostex 8 track mk2 that records to SD cards and...
I have had a Behringer AT108 for about 9 years now. Works great, sound good with piezo pick-up. I have several better but still use this when size and weight are an issue. It has been quite loud...
My regular bass player plays a 1970s Gibson fretless studio bass, has a great tone for string band music! Of course the tone is as much in her hands as the bass IMHO
My Strad o lin came with a broken saddle, I made a saddle of maple from some old organ peddles I had salvaged. It sounds great! I never had heard it with anything else so there's no comparison, but...
I have installed double piezo p/u with one under each bridge foot and had good results and installed single p/u more or less between the bridge feet with roughly the same results. Quite usable in...
I don't ;-)
I have been taking my Strad o Lin to music shops to compare the tone to the high dollar tone on the wall, while I have played some fine instruments, never felt the need to take one home since I've...
I can get very OCD and carry an entire backup sound system ;-) but to answer your question I usually have a Shure 57 & 58 in with my cords and DI box just in case.
Just got mine, I have severe loss from about 10k up. I don't know the brand (New ear?) But I love them ! The speaking program has some compression and the Music program removes the compression. I...
