Re: Questions about buying my first mandolin

Hi Zach. I think you'll love your Rogue oval hole. I have one I purchased from Musician's Friend and I like it a lot. Contrary to what some folks seem to believe, these are very well made mandolins...

Re: Beginner In Need Of Help!

For about the same price you can get a Rover RM50 from Folkmusician (sponsor of this site), which is a solid wood mandolin and probably better than the laminated Washburn. Plus, it will come with an...

    Re: Cleaning the mandolin?

It would be if they used a type face visible to the human eye. :)
  4. Re: Can anyone help identify this mandolin? Thanks!

Here's the Wiki link to Kay History and such: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Musical_Instrument_Company

They made that style for a long time.

    Link to mandolin pix:...

    Re: Mando For Dummies

One might wonder why the publisher didn't just produce this book spiral bound in the first place?

    Re: practicing in private

Interesting how animals react to music. I used to work at a zoo tending to great apes - chimps, orangs and gorillas. During cold winter months when we were inside, I used to sit by the gorilla cage...

    Re: Tips on finger-picking

Doesn't sound inappropriate to me. Sounds great in your video, and I would think it could open up whole new world of mandolin music for which a flat pick is limiting.

    Re: The First of May

Missouri can't decide if it's Spring or Winter.
  11. Re: what's the purpose of "points" on F models? what's the idea?

I think they are mostly just part of the f style design, although many players say the points help hold the mandolin steady against the leg when playing seated.
  12. Re: Awesome Nickel Creek instrumental from 2004

I don't know if it was a democracy (there are 3 others in that configuration), but Thile certainly dominates in that video. In fact, his mandolin overpowers the fiddle to my ear. Must be his Loar....

Re: Find what you love and let it kill you.

"Only" playing what others have written? No hand in bringing the sonata into the world?

I disagree. Classical music is unique in that it actually requires two creators - the guy who conceived the...

    Re: Anton Brauer Violin

There are fiddle folk at http://www.fiddlehangout.com/ that can give you their educated opinions, including some dealers/luthiers/repairers.

I'd try posting the photos there. The flaming on the...

    Re: Guitar Center Mandolin Experiences

Well, they ain't called Guitar Center for nothing.

The one nearest me is a 25 mile round trip, so I only go there if I need strings or picks, or something I don't want to wait for. Last time I was...
  16. Re: Does anybody on this forum prefer a pick that is not a bluech

Horn. I like the "darker" tone and easy grip.
  17. Re: Introduction to the Cafe and a couple questions...

I have a Gretsch New Yorker Supreme and it is ok for the price and quite attractive, but it is solid (pressed) mahogany and a bit crude in some ways (rough cut f holes, dust in varnish, etc.) I like...

Re: dawg picks for smoother playing?

Maybe it should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway -- it depends on what type of music you play and the sound you like. I like the Dawgs ok, and like the darker tone they give, but I find them...

    Re: Tonation issue

I'm guessing it is the nut height also. Rogues are pretty consistent build quality for what they are, and the frets are likely to be ok. But unless you are extremely lucky, very few Rogues are set-up...

    Re: Acoustic guitar vs mandolin

Because C to G, for example, is a Fifth. But G to C is only a Fourth. Look at a piano keyboard to see why -- C,D,E,F,G in the C major scale is a fifth, but G, A, B, C is a fourth. The pattern applies...

Mandolin can play any violin sheet music, of course, if you are interested in the classical or jazz aspect. Mel Bay publications has plenty of beginner (and advanced) books for all music styles...
