Hi forumites, long time since I've been posting here. Anyway,I've just thrown on a set of 12s for the first time on my mando there and although the A and E strings sound louder and fatter they are...
Anyone have advice on good strings for Irish tunes as far as tone and volume are concerned? There are so many brands out there and I've only tried out a couple. I usually play a GHS set 11-16-26-40,...
Hi otterly. I wouldn't describe my playing position like a closed fist - that would be like holding the mando neck with my thumb and fingers wrapped around the neck! The Irish repertoire (which is...
Does anyone else see any benefits from playing with the left-hand thumb going over the neck? There is a common attitude that this is a wrong way of playing the mandolin. I play Irish/Scottish tunes...
Man, you've got SOUL! Wonderful stuff.
My fav DADGAD player is the Italian Franco Morone. He has an instruction book with cd with some of the most beautiful soulful arrangements of Irish tunes that I've heard (Mostly DADGAD, but a couple...
Nice harmonies uncle ken. Does audacity only allow mono recordings? It would sound even nicer with a little stereo seperation of the parts imho.
You sound pretty relaxed on that uncle ken - nice version!
Yo Bluegrasstjej! Great work! Nurses!

Have you checked the Woodsongs show he played with Bryan Sutton? I think he plays Wolfcreek Pass, I can't remember. At least you could see where he's playing which might help you to work it out.
thanks again. I'm lucky to have the help of some decent recording gear - an older Roland VS880 digital workstation and a couple of reasonable mics. (Tip: recording mando and guitar in stereo really...
Thanks a lot for the encouraging comments guys - I really appreciate it. This place is my only outlet at the moment for the playing, learning and sharing of this kind of stuff, seeing as I don't seem...
I'll have a dozen crates please of whatever you're drinking Mr McGann. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
So my shot at RHB is posted - hope you like it.
That's an interesting point you make Aidan about finding your voice in Irish music. I'm one of those musicians who came to the traditional stuff the long way round after playing pop and dabbling in...
Just checked your second version of RHB there Benignus. Very cool - have you got a record deal yet?
lol (Hey what happened to your nose man?)
Great version Benignus, that brought a smile to my face . Now tell the truth, do you actually have dreadlocks or not?
Who was it that said "Opinions are like mandolins - everybody's got one."? Thank goodness that great music and musicians can take care of themselves, despite the rantings and ravings of the fans.
...
Ooops, I just made a search and see that this topic has already been addressed - sorry. Still if anyone has any further comments I'd like to hear.
From what I've heard/understood hornpipes are always played with a swing feel as oposed to straight eighth notes. Reels however are played both ways. I tend to play everything with a swing feel, from...
Having turned to mando not so long ago after playing guitar for years, I was also looking for a source for pentatonic scales for mando. I reckon it's a much more useful exercise to map them out...
This is just dopey but here goes..
