Geoff also builds some mandolins that look like a desirable (at least to me) alternative to a more traditional F5.

I wouldn't mind having a nice Loar A5 copy.
You want two chord songs?
Here is a list of 74 of them:

Chris Goertzen's book, Southern Fiddlers and Fiddle Contests, provides some good advice from a judge's perspective. And it is good read.

I have not visited any of Jackson's Georgia locations, but their shop in NC is pretty good.

Here's one I've not yet seen suggested:
The Big Ballad Jamboree, by Donald Davidson
I don't recall much about mandolins in The Big Ballad Jamboree, but it is a terrific, though somewhat...
Not an album per se, but K.C. Groves and David Long have a couple really terrific shows available for download from the Steam Powered Preservation Society.

That's beautiful.
I'm unfamiliar with the builder. Can you tell us anything more about the mandolin or its builder?

Lately I've been using either J-75s or Sam Bush strings on my A-9. I like both, but have a slight preference for the Bush strings.
I once had a professor who defined "apocryphal" as "something that probably isn't true, but it's such a good story that it ought to be." :)

Thanks!
Thanks, Trey.
I wonder if it will be a limited edition, and how it will differ from the regular A5 (other than in color, of course.)

I too miss XM X-Country. And one of the things I used to like about XM was that there was less dj chatter than you got on Sirius.
However, it is still better than commercial radio and I enjoy...
Anyone know anything about Rex Johnson, the 27 September Daily Featured Builder?
I also have a 2004 A9.
Has the Grover tuners and no fretboard dots. I've been told by someone who should know that it has a bone nut, though I'm not sure how you can tell.

The Parking Lot Picker's Songbook by Dix Bruce has over 200 songs. It is great for getting down a basic version of a lot of common songs.

I look forward to trying this one out.
And don't forget that Doc plays a mandolin on Snow White's Scary Adventure.
Looks fantastic!
But can I get it with a V8? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have always liked The Upsetters (after Little Richard's band that once included Jimi Hendrix).
The Ashville Upsetters.

Lots of great suggestions here already (South Austin Jug Band, Bonepony, Uncle Earl, Chatham County Line, Tim O'Brien, etc.) #You might also have a listen to the Steeldrivers. #And if you want...
