I would characterize my goal as to build the most tried and true design in a style of my liking. I’ve only had my hands on two tenors and won’t be making another, so I’m looking for something that...
The plan was delivered and I've had a few days to look it over and offer some initial thoughts. First, I am glad I bought it. It will be much easier to have than to pull all the specs together from...
Two minor updates:
I did end up finding a bracing photo for a very early Martin Tenor here (search for "Tenor" or scroll a bit more than halfway down). It is one of the guitars that Martin built for...
Those both look great. I was mocking up the style for my build and one of the options was basically a teens era 0-21T (never existed). I debated on the slot head, but seeing yours, I think it looks...
Well, I've found another set and it appears to be the best so far. Mimf has a page of plans and it includes a plan based on a ca 1962 0-18T by Erik Stookey (who I can't find any further information...
Thanks for the plans links. The GAL size 0 plan would be the closer of the two and would probably provide the better starting point.
I would need to make the following changes:
neck length

Resurrecting this old thread to update the current state of affairs. My goal is to collect enough specs to build a nice copy of a Martin 0-18T from whatever era folks think is best for flatpicking in...
I emailed the store, suggesting that they update the listing to show the damage right before I started the thread. This morning I see that the listing now has all new pictures that show the damage....
Throwing this out there for someone who might want a project.
I bought and returned the 1963 0-18T linked here. The current listing (including price, lack of descriptive text, and only pictures of...
I'm playing more bass lately, buit I've also played mandolin on and off for about ten of the twenty years or so that I've been in worship bands. I'd encourage you to give it a shot, but to also have...
Using Norwich as SE CT:
~ 1:45 to Lexington, MA (The Music Emporium)
~ 1:55 to Amhearst, MA (Fretted Instrument Workshop)
~ 3:00 to Staten Island, NY (Mandolin Bros)
All three have an...
Thanks. It's hard to say how long it took because I worked on it a little at a time. The kit comes with the rim assembled, neck is carved, tuner holes are drilled, and the top and back are carved...
I did the Stewmac A-5 kit 4 or 5 years ago and still use it as my main instrument. I took my time on the graduations and it sounds good. You can check out a picture album in my profile.
I stumbled across the Rags Breakdowns Stomps & Blues compilation recently and it has some of the artists listed above recorded in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. I'm a huge Monroe fan (strange that the...
I'll take a stab at points 1-3
1. None of the bluegrass instructional material that I have, nor any picker that I have ever met has suggested that the type of staccato and syncopated blues...
Oh, and go ahead and play those blues passages up-down-up-down and don't get too close to the bridge.
In all seriousness though, judging by a lot of players, folks seem intent on turning all...
I have heard some folks call Monroe's playing "sloppy." I'll echo Ivyguitar that anyone who has listened Monroe's early clean and blazingly fast work with Charlie or Lester and Earl would be hard...
I had time to take a second look; not a Waverly tailpiece. I do not know about the tuners.
Got another picture of the tailpiece, maybe from the end? It doesn't quite look like the Waverly that I'm familiar with.
Scott,
Please change Sacto-SF to Brad Nicholas. Thanks.
I do all of my practicing at work. I live in an aparment building and the only time I'm home when the kids are awake is the two hours after work. I obviously spend that time with them so practice...
I have a Monterey. I took the back off to fix a few items when I got it so I took a few pictures of the interior. It looks like the two codes in mine are:
Under bass f-hole: 3557H417
Between...
I believe you are thinking of a "soundpost". No, a mandolin does not have one. The tonebars in a mandolin are braces that run under the top from the area near the neckblock toward the tailblock.
My first kit is still my main mandolin - Stewmac A5. Pictures are in my gallery.
Pictures of all of the other mandolins so far in this thread (5-8 of 8):
