    Re: Loar copy on Craigslist

I wonder if this is a "I'll put 'the Gibson' inlay and signed label on this custom build, but you have to PROMISE me you'll never tell anyone I did this."

    Re: Electric mandolin indians

Why do we call these things mandolins?

They have the wrong number of strings and the wrong tuning. We might as well call an electric ukulele and electric mandolin.

Re: Chris Thile covering 1952 VBL

On the original Rumor and Sigh album recording it's Greeveses (plural of Greeves).

But, as I said, changes it on other recordings. Listen to the Acoustic Classics version at 3'55"

    It's clearly...

Re: Chris Thile covering 1952 VBL

To be accurate, from 1955 to 1960 Indians were rebadged (British) Royal Enfield motorcycles.

Also worth noting that from time to time Thompson substitutes various makes in that particularly line....

Re: Chris Thile covering 1952 VBL

The banjo is a 998cc V-twin engine in the Del version, particularly when everything else cuts out around 3 minutes in. It's perfect, so long as you're OK with the Britishness being stripped away from...

Re: Chris Thile covering 1952 VBL

I'm usually not a fan of artists monkeying unnecessarily with lyrics, but I do love how in Del McCoury's version the original "Box Hill" becomes "Knoxville."

Re: New Gilchrists land at Carter Vintage Guitars

Is that how we're supposed to be laying our mandolins down, with the fretboards and strings touching the table?

    Re: smashed to bits

When do we get to stop repeating the collective delusion that the mandolin was smashed by a vandal? Is there a specific date on that? Is it like the JFK papers?

Who here plays "The Old Home Place" in B-flat Major?
  12. Re: Would like to sell my Gibson Loar A-Jr circa 1927 - how?

Really depends on how well it plays and how clean it is. Probably somewhere between $1250 and $1750. Would be better if it had the original tuners.

  14. Re: Were non-Gibson F style mandolins around prior to the 1970s?

It depends on what you consider F-style.

John D'Angelico built at least one (very ugly) F-style mandolin in the 1940's. There was also the Epiphone Windsor model.

Re: seeking ID on an unknown mandolin

That thing looks sketchy as hell. I definitely wouldn't buy it without playing it first.

You have a BRW and an Altman. Why are you even looking at that thing? It's like you're Hugh Grant cruising...

Re: Gig bags: The Good and Bad

A Travelite foam case offers FAR better protection without really being any heavier. This is why I don't really get the point of gig bags for mandolins.

    Solid-body guitars are another story...
  18. Re: Mandolin with the largest frets for under 2k?

Find a used American-made Breedlove. You might be able to find a Cascade or something in that price range.

Re: Gibson F9 vs Collings MF - 2017 edition

Where do you live? If you're in NJ (which I'm guessing from your handle) than the smart play is probably a $250 flight to Nashville and playing the 80+ mandolins in your price range at Gruhn and...
  22. Re: Lesson me in Laminate! Does wood type matter?

People pay $30,000 for those old Selmer and Maccaferri guitars. They have laminate backs and sides and they sound phenomenal.

Don't get hung up on weird construction details.

Re: Is a Rogue a mistake for a beginner?

They're actually totally serviceable instruments if you put a little effort into setting them up.

And even after you upgrade you'll always have a "beater" to take camping or leave in your office....

    Re: Saying Farewell

Have you actually gone to see a rheumatologist?

Some people just accept this as part of aging and don't consider that there are ways to treat the problem.
